short report from Hyperfest
hi guys. i'll keep this short cause i'm beat....
usually, i'd be driving in the HC races in my H1 car. since its apart right now, i brought my backup car, PS-1 Ford Probe GT. this meant that i would be racing in a different heat, thus i'd be able to watch the HC races for once, instead of being in the midst of the fray! a different perspective totally!
1. it was damn hot, especially on sunday. not as bad as last years Hfest, but still damn hot!
2. those S2000s are really showing what they are made of. super fast, and well driven! they were moooooooooovin'!
3. quite a bit of "kablaaaaam! clank! days-of-thunder volume smoke" coming from the H1 crowd. seems like alot of the B series mills are being tuned to the brink and beyond.....
4. great race action!!!!!! alot of competition in the H4 ranks. the top 3 or 4 ran closely the whole race on sun. H5 was representing this year, too! quite a few H5 cars showed up to race, with a fast white CRX and a fast rookie (beno) driving john's old car. oh, and franza is in a class all by himself in H2; he was running way up in the h1 ranks!
to all the HC racers who took to the grid!
i had lots o fun racing, too. my old Probe ran great. zero problems, as usual. had good races both days (great race sunday). just couldn't quite get around that red VR-6 A2 GTI for the win on sunday. i tried reaaaaaaaly hard though, had almost zero brakes the last 7 laps or so; had to slow the car with the gearbox and pitch-slide manuveurs, especially into turns 5 and 10! that old girl always takes care of me and never lets me down. i really love my Honda racecar, but i've got a special place reserved in my heart for that Mazda powered Ford lump
can't wait for the next race, fellas!
off to work now
todd
PS anyone got any used 245-45-16 or 225-50-16 they want to ditch (any make tire will do, as long as it is R compound)? i was down to a set of 245-45-16 BFG R1 (4 years old!) on the front and 225-50-16 Kumho Ecsta on the rear for sunday's race; not really a setup i prefer to run!

Well, I have two barely used 225/50/16 Hoosiers from my "hooptie" set up, but knowing you, you're gonna offer me like $25 for both! LOL!
P.S. I've never actually driven the rubber completely off my tires before. After Sunday's race BOTH of my front Hoosiers were showing cords, and the right front was through the cords to the creamy filled center.
Oops.

I don't remember exact figures, but not fast enough for pole in HC.

Tom ran with us on Saturday. I *think* he put down a 1:25 something. He was in front of Scot Bruner and I at the finish, and I think all three of us ran pretty similar times on Saturday. H1 results haven't been published yet, but H2-H5 were. I ran a 1:26.1, so I'm guessing he was probably .5 or so faster. I believe he finished 5th overall.

Todd - that is the noisiest probe I have ever heard in my entire life!
I was trying to take a nap at turn 10 during your race........ every lap i could tell it was you without even looking up (i looked up 2-3 times and it was you every time) as you used the engine to slow alittle....
It was freaking hot for sure!
See everyone at VIR...probably be hotter there.

but its a nasty-noisy sound! she sounds like she means business, and sounds so much more "musical" than my H1 car. my 4 cyl H1 just sounds ratty on straight pipes, compared to the 6 cyl Probe.
i always wear earplugs, but the foam plugs blew out the window on the way to the grid, so no plugs for me on sunday's race! really loud in the car!
oh, and i hope that VIR isn't as hot and dusty! lots of dustclouds during the races at summit!

It was great watching you race from T10, Todd, especially on Sunday. We were rooting for you the whole race, seemed like you were really reeling in that golf a couple times.

makes me miss the one i used to have. sticky tires on front, streets on rerar, toed out at both ends, and the best exhaust note this side of a ferrari dino! how is it on brakes and rotors
todd, they way the started us, i never got close to you in a race ...too bad , i think our lap times were similar and my car overheats later in the race (as your brakes fade)
although i could see you in front of me on sunday, I just couldn't catch you !!
ps. did you stick around for the results of sunday's race, curious what lap times were in that heat
pss. temp on my truck said it was 102 when we came off track (although truck sat in the sun all day ;-)

she's TERRIBLE on the brakes and rotors. totally underbraked from the factory. and 2680 lbs with a 1/4 tank of gas. without driver. brakes are usually gone by lap 7 or 8. really totally gone at the end of the race! and yeah, it felt like 100+ degrees out there!!!
i saw you back there in the black sentra se-r; i'd say we were running very close laptimes. black car, maybe number 38?
and i'd definitely agree, that was a totally f'ed up restart. worst i can remember. its really hard for control to get those double split starts working right, especially after a failed first attempt (due to crash). they were getting behind schedule, and i think they almost had to give us the green.....
great race though. and turn 10 was hairy a couple of times there

hi.
i don't have any new vids digitized; maybe after the VIR weekend. here are some links to the older clips that i hope are still working!:
start of race and first lap (beaverun 2003):
http://www.we-todd-did-racing....DE%3D
944 versus Probe in turn 10:
http://www.we-todd-did-racing....DE%3D
serious brake fade in turn 10 (pedal on da floor!):
http://www.we-todd-did-racing....DE%3D
yup; it does sound sweet, as least from the driver's seat!
i don't think it meets the 95 db sound limit, though
