Default close ratio transmission

guys i've been searching for a while for an article than can help me understand how does a close ratio tranny works..if anybody can help post a link or explain it to me..

mkay. there is a numerical ratio for each gear in a gear box. the higher the number, the shorter the gear. so if first was 2.3 then second would be about 1.9. when the these ratios are very close, numerically, it is considered to be a close ratio transmission. close ratio transmissions are often used to keep an engine within its powerband, by not letting revs drop below a certain point. take d-series motors for example:y7 trannies are geared long as ****, for better highway gas-mileage while y8/z6 trannies(relatively close ratio) are geared shorter to keep the rpm from dropping out of Vtec. i hope i didnt butcher that too bad.

except that y8/z6 trannies still let the engine drop out of vtec after redlining
