Battery relocation
I'm relocating my battery to the hatch of my civic. I have seen a few articles on this, but I have a few questions. First thing is which battery to use. I have narrowed my options to 3 choices:
1.Optima red top model 34(rated as starting), CCA 800, reserve capacity 110min., weight 37lbs
2.Optima yellow top model D51(rated as deep cycle, CCA 500, res. cap. 70min, weight 29lbs
3.Hawker Odyssey model PC680, CCA 220, res. cap. 24 min, weight 15lbs
Now that you have all the specs. Which would you choose? I'm using the car as a daily driver for now, so I do have a stereo (2 amps under 200watts). I also plan to auto-x the car so weight is of importance as well. The question is will the Odyssey handle the load of the stereo? If anyone has used any of these batteries give me some feed back. Also, I have a 100amp circuit breaker from a previous system. Will this be sufficient to mount after the battery instead of a fuse? Or, will the breaker keep popping every time I start the car? If not, what size fuse should I use?

i would go with the yellow top if i were you, it's big and heavy but the hawker wouldn't last you long, if you really wanted to lose weight big the radio out and get the hawker.
Ive got a regualr generic battery and a 60 amp fuse, and havent had any problems.
I would go with the Hawker oddesy, I wanted to order that and ship it to canada, but apprently u cant ship battery acrros the border without doing some sort of paper work,.

I do plan to remove the stereo once I get another daily driver. I'm selling my bimmer & I needed somthing to drive in mean time. I cant commute to work w/o tunes! Anyone have the hawker running a stereo?

Odds are you already read that article, but in case ya missed it, he states:
"If you're a car stereo nut with multiple amps and subs, you would probably be fine with the PC680, but I would recommend using a different Odyssey model with a higher ampere-hour rating. I (stupidly) let the PC680 run my stereo and subwoofer setup for about 2 hours while I was working on some other parts of my CRX and had to jump start it when I was done. The PC680 recovered perfectly and hasn't had any trouble handling things when the car is running or when I don't leave the stereo on for hours at a time. The literature on the battery says it can withstand 400 complete discharges, but I don't want to test that myself."
So I reckon you should be fine..

I think fuses are better than ckt breakers.
I've reset breakers and found them to be open.
They also seem to get weaker with age.
Fuses are more reliable imo.
60A is good fuse size.
What kind of batt box you getting?

I have the Hawker Oddesy installed in the storage area behind the passengers seat. I do have a radio/cd player but no amps etc. I have noticed no difference in starting from the original battery under the hood. The Oddesy battery is sealed so you don't need a box, so why do you need a fuse? One thing I did was to run 2 GA wire and soldered the terminals. For a ground, I found a lug where seatbelts could be mounted under/behind the small storage compartment on the side of the main compartment. It has a 7/16-20 (i know it's not metric) threaded hole. Just sand off the paint and attach ground.

I don't plan on using a battery box since the the batteries I'm considering are sealed. I do plan to fabricate some sort of bracket to hold it securely. NCchris, are you asking why you need a fuse? Anytime you run a wire that long (from the hatch to the engine compartment), it could short out anywhere along the way. This could lead to catostophic circumstances! The batt. in my bimmer is located in the trunk from the fatory. I had an optima red top in there, and the batt. cover stuck up about 1/4". A spiral notebook in my trunk crossed the terminals & caught fire! I noticed it when my car started filling w/ smoke. I pulled over opened my trunk & flames started shooting out. The circuit breaker did nothing to prevent this from happening, but if there was a short in the wire along the way I'd imagine the same type of thing would happen.

I'm using an Optima Yellow Top in my civic right now. I let the beast sit all through winter and when I went out this spring to start her up, there was a little hesitation, but no problem whatsoever. Get the Yellow Top.

I'm running the SPV35 I ran it in my suzuki Grand Vitara with a MTX 1500 Watt Amp pushin 2 Exlipse 900 Watt 12" subz and a MTX 400 watt amp for the rest of my speakers. ran beuatifully now that I'm building up my CRX I'm running that same battery in the CRX w/o the system (the subs and box weighed like almost 100 lbs)

I don't know about you guys, but I'd be quite concerned about having an acid based battery of that size sitting in the same air space as the passenger compartment. I'm not so concerned about the acid wrecking things.... I'm more concerned about the fire hazard and toxic fumes in the case of a bad battery failure. It is a risk you take.

Depends on if your box is vented or sealed.
the sealed ones have a tube that vents gasses to outside the car while air inside the car stays free of it all.

I know the optima's are good. I've had one in a prior system. It's just that they are heavy. I guess what I am looking for is whether the Odyssey will withstand the current draw of the 2 amps I'm running.

I have a relocated battery in my hatch w/ an optima yellow top. I love the battery, and wouldn't recommend anything else if your running a stereo setup w/ amp(s). I had a 400 watt amp with mine, and it powered it perfectly. Hell, I left the car sitting and bumping for a couple of hours, and it started back up without hesitation.

great batteries my friend runs 4 of them then again he is pushin 4 12" IDMAX's at 1000 watts each. but my stinger battery ran my 400 watt and my 1500 watt amp very nicely never had a problem with it.
I checked out the stinger. It looks pretty nice too. I guess I'm going to have to wait on the odyssey until I get another car to use as a daily driver, and can use the civic just for racing duties. Thanks for all the input. I'll let you guys know which one I get & how the install goes.
