01, gs-r, 25k miles --> value?
I'm looking at a 2001 two door GS-R with 25,xxx miles. It's in pretty good shape - a few door dings and minor scratches, but nothing major anywhere. It is being sold at a dealer, and is Acura Certified. The dealer is asking for $16k, but that seems a bit steep for a 3 year old car to me. I have two questions:
How much would you guys pay for it?
What tips do you have for discussing price with the salesman?
Sorry there aren't any pictures, I realize that it's really hard to discern the value of a vehicle with only a 5 sentence description, and thanks in advance for any help you guys have. Also, be prepared to see lots of pictures if I end up getting a good price on it.

Thanks for the info tpham.
Anybody have any other suggestions, particularly on how to deal with the salesman? I've never bought a car from a dealer before and just want to gather as many tips as I can to get the price down.

Yeah but you probably saw some high mileage ***, poorly mantained ITR with no warranty from some dude on the street or a ghetto *** dealership. If its certified then I think your first 30,000 miles are fully covered, so you can drive it like you stole it and make sure you got what you paid for. Besides man if I got offered an ITR (limited collectors car) for less than that either its sold by an idiot or somethings wrong. $13,000 for a teg is cheap, especially one with a leather interior, seats everyone wants, and a warranty.
VTEC integras are pretty high demand and low supply in most of the country.
The prices tpham are quoting are commensurate with "dumping" prices, ie the price one would expect to get if he had to sell a car immediately. Basically, that's either a desperate seller price or a dealer auction price. A dealer would only sell a SWEET car like that if they've held on to it for a long time and want to get rid of it quickly. Sure, one can buy crap like crown vics and grand ams at near-auction prices because supply generally exceeds demand (and people get way lower than auction at trade in for cars like that). Oakland is a vastly different market than MN. In CA, GSRs grow on trees...in most of the US, they are uncommon at best
I think picking up a very new GSR at close to auction price isn't really doable...UNLESS the dealer really wants to get rid of it and/or you get a hook-up. From what I know of the area I live in, Honda/Acura dealers are always on the look out for GSRs because they know they fetch top dollar. SdGSR01 is right, $13K for a latest model GSR is cheap, probably too cheap. I think you could probably get $14K, but they probably will insist on $15K. That's when you go home and they call you later in the day to agree to $14K

those prices come from the Black Book...which is not available to the public..my dad is a dealer so that's how much dealers can get it for at a dealer auction.

just get them under $15k for sure, that's where there is a HUGE tax spike.
taxes on an 01 model below $15k = $165
taxes on an 01 model above $15k = $1050
atleast where I live it's that way

that's property tax and it is dependent on the state. I'm gonna doubt MN does that.
also, the "black book" prices represent sell side "ASAP" sale prices. Basically, black book is the price one "dumps" a car to a wholesale buyer (READ a buyer uninterested in the model). Buy side prices, what an INTERESTED buyer would pay for a car, is the blue book.

I got mine for $16,100 tags and title included with 10,500 miles on it in may of 2003 so i guess its your call it sounds just tad bit to high see if you could talk him down a grand or two.
edit** then again i bought my car from a private party.

it's sales tax... and i'm sure it's similar in most states</TD></TR></TABLE>
no, sales tax is linear and is a straight multiple of the price. property taxes are levied on cars by some states, and when your car is in a higher bracket (over 15K) it is taxed much higher, hence the jump.
