hey i have been back n forth with this idea of engine swap or gsr head swap....no im thinkin type r engine....here is the thing will the type R engine fit into a 1996 rs? and what year should be used? thanks if anyone can help please!!!
a type-r will fit no problem. it's the same as dropping a gs-r engine in. the motor's year does not matter because it will be newer than yours no matter what since type-r's came out in '97. i would have a shop do it if you've never done a vtec conversion or engine swap. good luck.
looks like you ned to search and red some more to make uop your mind.. asking a ? like this will never work out.. cause tehr are to many bias opinions... just read and research and make up your mind.

The wiring on an ITR swap will be easier, just run VTEC solenoid and pressure switch wires, whereas on a GS-R swap you would have to run more wires for the dual-runner intake manifold, unless you went w/ a Skunk2 manifold on the GS-R engine before putting it in.
Hmm 96 = OBD2, so if you go w/ an ITR swap, just use an ITR ECU, ITR engine harness, and add the 2 VTEC wires in the ECU harness up to the harness on the pass. side shock tower, and everything should plug right in, easy peasy
If you go w/ a GS-R swap, you can use an OBD2 P72(GS-R) ECU, use an OBD2 GS-R engine harness, and then add the necessary wires from the ECU plugs up to the shock tower plugs (either 4 or 5 wires including the VTEC wires, I can't remember), and again, it should all plug right up.
If you go w/ a GS-R engine and Skunk2 manifold, you'll need to run something like a chipped P28 ECU, so an OBD1 conversion would be in order. If you use an OBD1 GS-R engine, you might can just swap out the chassis harness (from ECU to shock tower) and it would probably all plug in. For an engine harness, either use the OBD1 GS-R harness (will have extra plugs since the dual runner manifold isn't there), or use an OBD1 Civic EX harness. If you can't swap out the chassis harness, I think you would have to move some wires around on the shock tower plugs, and run an OBD1 conversion harness in order to use the chipped P28 ECU.
If you run an OBD2 GS-R engine w/ Skunk2 manifold, then just use an OBD2 engine harness (from an OBD2 Civic EX probably), add the 2 VTEC wires to the chassis harness, and then use an OBD1 conversion harness to plug in the chipped P28 ECU.

Why do you think Type-Rs are the most stolen car out there? Their engines pwn, and fit into any Teg/Civic... unfortunately.
If it didn't fit so good into other cars then it wouldn't be stolen.. probably not at all.. Unless they are stealing to put into another R..
