Help on purchasing a CRX
I hate to post these "should I buy it ?" topics but I don't know much about CRXs. I own a 92 civic hatch. I am looking to buy a beater and CRXs cost about half as much as EGs in my area. I found some CRXs in my area via autotrader.

1989 HONDA CRX, 5 spd, good tires, push button start, runs excellent, 130k mi, rare car, $1580,

1988 HONDA CRX, only 82k orig mi, runs great, $1100
Are theses decent prices? I plan to go look at them over the weekend, what should I look for?

Go look at both of them. Have the checked by a mechanic you trust and ask alot of questions.
on the 1989, when i see push button start, a warning goes off in my head. He could of had electrical problems and simply bypassed it with the switch. Now that gives me an indication that he may have had other problems to and simply macgivered the repairs. If it ever breaks down, it will be very difficult to trace all that mess. Why not ask him about that push start button??
As for the 1988, can't say.
Now what to look for:
1. check the appearance of the engine. Is it covered in oil, electrical connections look good. Any new parts like starter, battery, alternator, plugs and such.
Look at the bolts on the engine. Are they all rounded. Indicates if the motor got torn into and the quality of work. Look and smell all the fluids.
2. check the body carefully. Look for rust and accident damage.
Do the panels line up. Run a magnet around the wheel wells. if it does not stick weel, you have bondo. Any overspray on the wheel wells and such
3. look under the car: How is the exhaust? How is the suspension? Is the tranny leaking.
4. Look into the interior. Look at the clutch and brake pedal. If you think it is to severly worn to warrant the mileage, maybe something is wrong, or the car was driven alot in stop and go traffic.
5. look in the trunck for rust, water and such
6. Ask a ton of questions about maintenance. And ask him repeatedly while you are looking at the car. If he is lying a bit, you will catch it.
7. take it out for a test drive. If it is manual, test the clutch by letting it go real fast. If it does not kick in right away, maybe the clutch is going. go over bumps and listen to sounds. Start it cold, take it for a ride, start it how and take it for a ride. Try out the heater, and all accessories to see if they work.
8. As you are walking around the vehicle, wiggle things like mirrors and such. See if they are attached properly and won't come off as you are driving.
9. look at the tires. A real bummer when you buy a car and have to put 400$ on tires right away.
10. Also, call up the DMV. Sometimes, they can suprise you with unknown mandatory inspections and such on a vehicle of that age.
11. Check all the exterior as well as interior lights if they work.
12. Lastly, Bring a friend that knows cars. Two heads are better than one.... Or should i say 4 eyes are better than 2.

Are these good prices for CRXs? I ask b\c I see others on the board that are debating paying half as much for basically the same car.

CRX's owners seem to be cheap. I'd pay $3-5k for a mint 88 Si.
Also once you get a CRX you'll turn the EG into the beater it'll happen just watch.
Also check out the white one first. I like white ones myself.

they both look nice, but as posted before
the top one with the push button start.
that just send up a flag in my head.
I would rather have the other (more stock) one.
with that few of miles for that price.

yes, i know what you are saying, in my area i cant seem to find any that are less than at least 1500, so i think that the 1,100 is a good price.

that put a green light up in my head. it must have mad racing potential to have a push button start. i'm kidding, i agree with the others. sounds like he didn't fix things the right way, he just "mcguievered" it. good luck i love CRXs.

Excellent welcome to the family
You should also run Carfaqs report on these. It'll tell you if the vehicle's been stolen, in flood, fire, rollover miles, rebuilt....Granted it's only based on what's been reported
There's a member who has an account till the end of this month and he could probably run one for you. It's in GDD forum.
Best of luck

Do all CRXs have cable trans? I was planning to do a B series swap sometime in the future. Would I just swap over all the hydro parts (if the CRX is cable trans). Or would I have to get a cable trans for the b series motor.
What is easiest?
What is easiest?
