HELP: strange noise after highway brawl with an 2.8L Audi A4
hi guys. your assistance would be greatly appreciated. as of now i'm not driving my DC2 GS-R, and have maintenance scheduled for next wed.
here's the scoop. i was racing a late model 2.8L Audi A4 up to the higher triple digits. after edging him out by a few car lengths i began to slowly creep back to my normal cruising speed. i drove the rest of the way home without any problems. i washed the car and parked it for the evening.
this morning during my cold start i noticed a hollow, metallic, semi-pinging, vibrating noise coming from under the hood between 1,000RPMS-3,500RPMS. the sound wasn't terribly loud, but did increase in volume as the car warmed to normal operating temperatures. i turned the car around, parked it, and took the truck to work.
do you guys know what might be the problem? i did add a RU-2820 K&N air fliter a few hundred miles ago, but i haven't had any troubles with that. bent rod? i'm not throwing and CELs or anything. the car is behaving as it should, it's just making that hollow, metallic rattling sound at low RPMs.
any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

go do a compression test and/or a leak down. either of these tests will tell you if anything is wrong internally. good luck.

you know, it very well could be. [novice]where might i locate that to check? [/novice]

The header heat shield could be rattling, which would be right there in the engine bay. There is also a thin metallic lining that follows the exhaust system back, usually held in by a few bolts. This was all on my DA, but I would bet it's near the same on a DC.
Heatshields are pieces of tin that line your ehxaust at different points. They are located between the exhaust and the bottom of the car to negate some heat off the bottom of the car. They are notorious for rusting/rotting and then touch or rub up against the exaust which produces that hollow tinee rattle at certain RPMs. Put the car on jack stands and inspect underneath, locate the diff portions of the heat shield and check the mounts, if you find a bad portion, cut it out with tin snips.

Could have been a piece of the catalyst material that got dislodged inside the cat, but I guess you found the problem.
And next time take it to the track.
