Default Legality issue concerning swap

Ok my question is. My friend is selling a swap, but he doesn't have papers on it.
however the vin is on the swap and when you carfax it, it comes clean.
So if i buy the motor do i need papers?
cuz he has none, but the vin comes up clean on carfax?
Any ideas?

I say that if the engine number is not shaved off, you should not have any problems. My best guess./

Because here in NY there are a lot of autocrimes and I want to be legit.
If the vin is on and the car checks out clean? is the motor legal?
because if I buy it off my friend i won't have any papers.

Yes, it should be. The motor is coming from your friends car? So did he buy it from another person or was that his original motor?

Another thing you might want to consider....if your friend got a stolen motor and you get caught with it....YOU are "toast"...

But I guess it all depends on the state you live in.

arent the only "papers" that come with cars just written bills of sale? just get a written bill of sale and if the motor checks out clean everything is ok, and if it checks out bad someone else is at blame

Is your friend or the guy he bought it off of shady? I'd say if the VIN is clean then go for it, or maybe you can call somewhere to check if it was stolen.

If you are good friends than trust him if not then thats one person that needs an *** whooping. I think in Cali they find out whos motor it is. If the person wants it back then you have to give it back but, if not then its yours to keep

as long as the vin came up clean, you should be fine. Another thing 2 consider... out here in cali, when swapping a motor into your car, 2 have any chance of being street legal, the motor must be of the same year of your car or newer!!! When getting cali bar label for my b16a, my motor was out of a 95 del sol vtec. My car had 2 pass the smog requirements of a 95 vehicle. Make sure to leave all of your emission equipment on your car and resist the temptation to install all your mods while swapping your motor unless you are ready 2 pay some $ for a illegal smog! illegal smog, whats that?
