do you take the master cylinder loose and bring it up or take out the axle and go down?

Most people I know had to pull the axle out to do it. Me... well, it's been a long time since I had the car, but I somehow just twisted and yanked the bitch out from the top. I didn't have to loosen anything else, but it took a lot of elbow grease and cursing and banging to get it out that way.

As long as you have fuel injection, it is best to take it out the top. Here is what you want to do- there are a few bolts holding on the air filter case, within a minute or two you can have the whole housing out and from there is is simple to disconnect the alt. and pull it out the top. In fact you can problably put both arms down there after you take it off. However if you have the carb. you will probably want to take out the drivers side cv shaft.
