K&N or cheap CA intakes from ebay??????
I was thinking about installing a K&N for my DA, but i see that on Ebay theres CA intakes for about the same price as a K&N. does anyone have any feedback on those $40 CA intakes???
they will get the job done, but they dont compare to name brands like aem, iceman, etc...
the filter on the ebay intake is more like a paper filter then a k&n style.

If the CAI has the proper diameter and dimensions, I would think it would work just as well as a name brand one. Most of these eBay intakes are just copies of them anyways. Just change the crappy filter and you should be ok.
However, I noticed you live in CA. With that being said, I'd recommend that you get yourself a CARB approved intake, since it would be a pain if the cops ever popped your hood.

plus you need an intake with a CARB EO# to smog since you live in CA. get the KN and remove your intake resonator, thats what i have.
intake resonator huh? sounds like a plan, maybe i'll get a iceman or something if i decide to keep it. im still debating if i will be keeping it. but i think ill do that. what do you think if i take out the screen in the mass air flow sensor?

I had the K*N drop in and it did nothing for my teg. I took out the intake resonator and the teg sounded mean as hell, but did just about nothing for performance. Get a proper intake system... even if you want an ebay one, just get the piping and slap on a different cone filter. After taking out the K&N drop in for the aem cai, I felt a very noticable difference.

I bought a $45 eBay no brand CAI a month ago or so. I had fell into the hype on my old Civic and bought a $65-75 Tenzo R SRI, so I was making sure not to fall for it again this time. After all, it's just a tube with a filter at the end right?
Well anyway, tonight I decided to check to make sure the filter was doing alright. So I undo the screw and the bolt and pull the liner down and boom, there falls half my filter onto the ground! I have no clue how long it had been like that, but I practically pissed my pants. The worst part is the filter had about half a dozen small rocks in it that fell out when I shook it upside-down.
Here's a picture after I yanked the lower part of the CAI out.

Hopefully this didn't do any damage to my engine. I'm pretty sure it didn't. I checked the oil and it is still great. I dont drive hard or fast so that probably helped.
Also, here's another reason not to buy cheap eBay intakes. (should have thought about this before I ever bought it)

Here's after I squeezed my 3" old Tenzo filter onto the 2-3/4" (or whateversize it is) piping.

Lesson learned: Piping may be the same quality for the $45 intake as the $150 intake, but the filter sure isn't! I think I'm going to get a Comptech Icebox with ITR tube and K&N filter once I get the car paid off. Then I wont have to worry about this every again.

becareful with those Filters that come with e-bay intakes!
also Tuner Performance reports did a comparison test on some of the popular brands of intakes:

dyno graphs are available. hope that helps out a bit.

I got a red powder-coated CAI off ebay for 50 bucks, including shipping. Came with a decent filter too. It looks to be cloth, not paper.
Here's a pic of it installed in my engine compartment:

Overall, I thought it was a good deal and it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I was trying to stress that e-bay FILTERS are the ones to watch out for. Yes intakes are filters on tubes... no doubt about it, but there are some people out here who haven't gone past the intake hype. I provided that link to tpr in hope that people would see for themselves what types of gains to expect from the type of STYLE they want and let people decide for themselves. When people resort to people telling them what to get, what do you gain from that as a person?
