89 integra alternator question.....who's replaced one?

89 integra alternator question.....who's replaced one?
i'm reading the haynes book and it says you have to remove
the left drive axle if you have ac.......wtf.........is there anyway
around this or do you HAVE to remove the axle to get it out.
