How many of you have actually rustproofed your Rs??
Just curious if anyone has.
The dealer has just done mine (2001). It looks ok, not too messy or anything like that.
The rust proof appears waxy in appearance, not sticky, greasy, or oily.
I've heard of people having the rustproof bake into the paint, resulting in a nasty brown colour.
Do you guys think I should clean up the wax from under the hood? I've decided on I am going to leave the rustproofing under the car alone.
The only complaints I have is it does'nt look "new" any more in the engine compartment. i just don't want it to bake into the paint over time and have dirt, sand, etc. stick onto it.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The type of rust proof the dealer use is wax based, and they claim to be life time warranty. There are other places which use oil base and won't give you that ugly look under the hood and they work even better than the Wax based. The other thing is it has to be done 1 a year or 1 every 2 years. The best well known oil based rust proofer is Krown. I have seen 88 CRX, Civic which use Krown without a single spot of rust. and cars that are as old as 83 without any rust. I would say if you have the wax based, just leave it. How often are people going to open your hood.
Citanest, have you had your R rustproofed as well?
I just can't believe, before under my hood it was white (really really clean).
I won't have to worry about it rusting, thats the ONLY good thing.
I just hope it in time it does'nt get worse, dirt, sand, etc. getting trapped on the paint, baking and discolouring, etc.
I guess it can't look nice and not rust at the same time.

I need some advice on this, becauase I like the way it currently looks under the hood. I don't want any nasty brown gunk.
Anyone use Rust Check? I think they use an oil spray.

I had mine Rust Checked and yes it is also an oil spray. (You can buy cans of it at Canadian Tire) They have 2 types, a thin, red tinted oil and a non-drip thicker version (also red I think). For the underbody, you can use the red stuff or a much thicker black coating. The black stuff works good but it makes your underbody look permanently dirty. The red oil eventually thins out and goes clear but it attracts dirt and grime like there's no tomorrow. But to me, dirt looks better than rust, so I don't mind. Worst part is how these oil sprays make your rubber gaskets and mouldings swell up and stop fitting the body and hood lip properly. Haven't found a way to fix that other than to replace the rubber strips.
For Japanese made car like ours, you mostly won't see any rust in 5 years even you heavily drive it in the Winter without washing. However, most rusts start from inside fender of the car and towards the outside. You may ask why the hell does it start inside.
the rubber seal at the quarter panel after summer -> winter -> summer -> winter, it will start to crack and water and salt can start leaking into the panel and that's the fun begin
Krown is very well known for rust proofing and YES, THEY DRILL HOLES ON YOUR CARS!!!!!!!!! In order to access all the panels on your cars, they drill holes. You will be like, f*** THAT!!! However, I would say they are the best out there. Many top body shops highly recommend Krown especially for those who have done body work due to collisions
I am not sure about Rust Check because no one seems to recommend them but I didn't hear any bad things about them either. However, Krown has been around for years and I have seen cars from the 70's without any rust at all. I guess it doesn't really matter which one you go for if you are not going to keep your car for more than 7 years or so.
But if you want to keep your car for while, I would go for Krown and won't try to save that 30-40 bucks for a rust proof. Open the Yellow pages and you will be amazed by the number of Krown Franchise you see.

Les, those oil based rust proof will make the rubber rinkle because Honda use f***ing cheap rubber on some places on the car. Krown won't spray the hood rubber seal because they know that rubber is well known to go rinke.
However, it's your choice, either the wax base, forever ugly under the hood, or oil based, potentially swell up the rubber... or let it rust, or not drive it in the winter
BTW, do Rust Checked drill holes too?

Well, i've decided I won't open my hood up as much now and spare my self an eyesore, holy **** does it ever look god awful under the hood.
I know it will take me hours if not a whole day and then some to clean all that wax up.
I should've asked the dealer to leave under the hood alone.
I could see dirt or sand slowly accumulating already on the panels.
I've learned my lesson, next car I get will not have rustproofing under the hood.
Thanks for all the input guys.

Sorry I'm late on this one... I've had 5 new cars now... always got them rustproofed inside and out... it's real messy under the hood after a few years cause the dirt just sinks into the stuff.. just gross, especially if the monkey doin the spraying is indescriminate...
The R was a bit of a surprise cause the deal fell through for someone else which is why I got the last new one sold.. They had already undercoated it for the other guy
so it was free for me.( I didn't want it undercoated cause I thought I wanted to save weight )
But they didn't go crazy under the hood, so it still looks really clean..
Lotus, you would'nt have any pics under the hood would you? I'll take pics of mine and post it, want to see what kind of response I get as to wheter or not I should leave it. I picked up some simple green as you can gather what I might be doing this weekend.
