HELP...Need Help installing a pair of aftermarket speakers for 99 civic lx 4-door
I have a 99 civic lx 4-Door.I just rescently bought a pair of Infinity 6 1/2 speakers for my front doors.I bought the Honda/Acura Metra Speaker Harness to attach the speakers to the OEM connecting wires. The speakers can't fit in the OEM speaker slot...either I am doing it the wrong way or is their something else that I must do to mount the speakers into place. Help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.
no I haven't, I just took out the speaker and the grill. Im a beginner, so I don't really know what to do...lol, what exactly should I do?...thanks!
I am a pro alarm/audio installer, first u need to take the whole door off, U will also need very shallow speakers or use a .5" or 1" speaker spacer that u can buy from BB or CC. There is not alot of clearance in honda/acura doors it will go in but the window glass will hit the magnet. You started off on the right foot by buying speaker harnesses, most people just do the cut and splice thing which is the wrong thing to do, I would also recommend a dynamat door speaker kit, u might as well since u are in the door anyway.

So; in my '98 HX Civic, will using a spacer allow me to keep the stock speaker grills?
I'm thinking not, and it's an odd-shaped grill; the shallow 'easy-fit' speakers (Crutchfield.com, etc) are below the level of what I think is a 'good' speaker.
Thoughts?

Then you should know you don't need the spacers.. infact it sorta makes it a bitch to keep the speaker from not hitting the covers (I know from personal experience with infinity components without even using spacers).
You can do this without taking the door off, but it's easier to do with it off. The plastic basket behind the factory speaker needs to be dremeled out, or if you take the door off you can also use a airsaw or something of that sort to cut it off. It gives you the little extra clearance you need to get the 6.5 infinity to fit. If you're worried about the water sepage from the window seal, you can get the foam "baskets" from crutchfield which will keep the water off the speaker while still being flexible enough to fit behind the speaker.
The other option if you want the Infinity is to go with the newly released (as far as we've carried anyhow) INI 6002Isi. these speakers are something like 1 7/8" instead of the 2"+ depth of the normal infinity. Either way you should not need to use a spacer. Even when putting the 6.5 components into my old 98 civic without using spacers, I had to kick at some of the supports in the speaker cover to keep clearance between it and the surround.
I do have to admit though, Honda speakers are one of the more pain in the butts just because of the depth limitation. Also, if you are looking to dynamat (which can never hurt) do the whole door.. the only thing is you will have to take the whole door panel off

LOL ok so your a pro audio/alarm installer huh. well if you were you would know that the speaker on a 98 civic is screwed to the door panel. so no you do not need to take off the door panel. the speaker grill just kinda pops off, there are 2 clips on the bottem of the grill, so just kinda pull on it. and it will pop off. the speaker has 3 screws holding it in. the problem your having is that honda never put a 6.5inch speaker in the front of a civic (untill 2001" so the speaker in your car is not a 6.5. its accually a true 6inch speaker. the infinity is a true 6.5 inch speaker. so its bigger than the stock speaker, but once the basket is cut will fit fine. also another problem with honda is they always use a basket behind the speaker. you'll notice when you pull out the speaker that there is a plastic basket behind the speaker, protecting it from the window. when installing new speakers you almost always have to cut this plastic basket out. it will give you almost an extra inch behind the speaker, so the speaker will fit in depth wise. there will be no problem with the window hitting, as long as you have the reference series infinity's. also if you notice man when pulling out the speaker that the speaker accually screws onto the plastic door panel. so if you were to pull the door panel and install the speaker in the hole behind it, then the door panel would not fit back on because the speaker would be in the way. lol, that kid who replied to you "sammydhoff" is a idiot. lol, and should not be answering car audio questions. and if he's a pro alarm/audio installer i would like him to tell us where he works, just to make sure i never get anything installed there. "i'll bet he works and best buy or circuit city. lol"

I do these cars by drilling, [with a holesaw] a hole the size of the speaker magnet into the back of the speaker housing in the door panle,[like C.A.P. said this will give you about an inch] and depending on the speaker I will make a depth reducer,[ more like a gasket ] most of the time 1/8" or 3/16" is enough to deal with that first "step" of the speaker basket, I have even done some 1/4" ones, only works on speakers with a very thin mounting lip and may need some dremmeling to the grill so it will fit back on flush.

I just installed infinity kappa 6.5" in my 2000 civic a few months ago. The speaker surrounds were much larger than normal aftermarket speakers. Not only did I have to cut out the plastic cup backing from the door panel, but i also had to make the metal door hole bigger as well. I did this by cutting 3/4" long slots into the door all the way around the circle. Here is what i'm talking about:

Then i used a hammer to bend the tabs back into the door. Try to fold them over on themselves so they dont stick out as much. Once i did this i was able to fit the speaker flush in the hole. The tweeters stick out a lot on the kappa series so i had to sand away the back of the plastic grill gaurd just a little. I only took off about 3/16" but that was enough so the factory speaker cover would fit like normal. Hope this helps anyone that is mounting big speakers in little factory holes. And no i didnt have to REMOVE THE DOOR.

i just got myself a set of infinity 60.5cs 6 1/2 component speakers. installed the wooffers and all, but the tweeters wont fit in the stock civic si bezel. anyone got any suggestions on how to mount the infinity speaker since it is smaller then the stock one?
All the tweeters ive seen in civic door panels dont use the stock bezel. Theyre mountd flat on the door or elsewhere like the mirror pod on the inside.
yea civic si's have the mirror pop. its called a sail panel. im trying to put the tweeters in there but the tweeters are smaller. Any suggestions on what to do? the infinity tweeters are 1 inch.
Im sure someone here has encountered this issue. I left the tweeters stock for the time being. Wait for someone to reply with a method they used or use a little creativity and common sense with installations and custom fabricate yourself a nice little bracket if theres enough space or with the space provided. Just be sure its mounted down solid.
on club si someone customized it by dremeling the stock tweeter out. heres the link: http://forums.clubsi.com/showf...age=1
see...i would do this but i wanna see if theres an easier way then this. i also wanna keep the stock tweeters in case i go back to stock one day.

Thats the tricky part about custom fabricating. I cant think of something unless im looking at it myself. He managed to figure something out as he said by looking it over. Theres always more then one way to do something. Hopefully someone can come up with a method theyve already done for you. I used to keep stock stuff too but last week when i put my aftermarket speakers in i thought about the factory sound for a second and remembered how SHITTY they are without comparison. I ripped the plug that the harness from the car plugs into off the speaker and used it to wire up my aftermarkets. So either i leave my speakers in the car IF i ever sell it or i just get some factory speakers from anyone getting rid of some. You can use the speakers from any honda that has the same size speaker. All the plugs are the same. Prelude factory speakers have larger magnets then civics and integras. Not sure about accords. I ran those for a short period of time. Alas, nothing beats factory like ANY aftermarket speaker.
yeah i have hella stock speakers in my garage. its just hard to come across stock tweeters for si's
my new tweets are 3/4 the oem ones were 1 inch, .. so Ive got some space in there as well... my plan is, when the car gets back from the body shop in a week or so... is to either find some black hot glue.. which no one seems to have... or just take regular hot glue, and make a gasget around the tweeter pot in the stock "sail" then put black yarn around it, and kind of make it smooth with my fingers... go figure.. I bet I could just use clear hot glue, make it ooze over, and then sand it smooth and paint that.. but... im just not that involved at the moment.
Ill be sure to let you all know what the hot glue or yarn/hotglue does in terms of helping the look.

Are you guys talking about the EX speaker pods by the window? So they measure 1" for the opening? Will they go 1.1"? I plan on getting a set but the tweets are 1.1".
I also heard the same thing about the door speakers being a 6" speaker where everyone thinks they are 6.5's. Guess it is true! To the guy that had all the info on that information... What is needed to mount the rather LARGE CDT HD62's in place since I believe they are four bolt, over 3.5" deep, large basket, 6.5" size and would like them to go under the factory speaker cover?

im not sure with the tweets, I did this reciently to my car, so if you have a pic of it, and dimensions.. I might be able to tell you if it will fit... however.. I bet, that with a little dremeling, you could get it to fit well... I was gonna do that, and get the trim peices that came with my kenwoods to fit.. but I may have to sell this in the future... and my audio is coming with me, which means, it all has to be able to go OEM again.

As for mounting bigger speakers in the door of a Honda/Acura, two things, custom and MDF, from something as simple as a depth reducing ring/spacer to relpacing the whole OEM speaker mounting basket with a custom MDF speaker housing.
Nothing is impossible, the impossible takes longer and costs more money
