help my car broke...
okay so i made the biggest mistake of my life 2 weeks ago. i had to go on vacation at noon, but had to change my oil. i didnt wanna get all dirty so i went to BIG O TIRES because i had a coupon. so they changed it (took 2 freakin' hours
)
blah blah everything was coo. then saturday... i was driving and i started hearing a knocking noise sometimes.. was low so i just thought an axle was going bad due to my HORRIBLE allignment... well i was 30 miles from home so i just went for it.
noises were getting louder... louder louder... then bam.... check oil light... i freaked out.... let off the gas a little cause i was in shock... then BAM!!! engine just turned off! so i move the key from ON to ACC then back to ON and it turned on but it was running horrible and the oil light flashed a few times then stayed on.... then BAM! engine turned off again and wouldnt turn back on.. so i coasted to the sholder of the freeway. checked oil and BAM! so dry. i got pretty mad and sad in the car and waited for the oil to settle.... checked it again and there was BARELY anything in there. grrr.
no leaks... and im pretty sure it wasnt burning oil (espeically not that much in 2 weeks)... so the only thing i can think of was big o tires didnt fill it all the way..... but i can't be 100% sure on that so i wont be pointing fingers. i filled it up with my reserve oils in the back of my hatch... then started the engine.. it started, no more oil lights, but the knocking noises remained =[
so i called AAA and they towed me home. from lynwood to torrance.
my grampa listened to it and he said it might be a valve spring? wouldnt it be more of a ticking noise though? i never heard a ticking noise before... but im pretty sure what i hear is more of a knocking noise.. and searching H-T i found out low oil is usually a messed up rod bearing.
i cant open my oil pan yet, because my parents told me to wait because tonight my dad's mechanic friend is going to come over and listen to it... so i need the oil left in it.
anyways, so my plan tomarrow is to take off the pan and inspect the bearings.
so my question is.. how should i inspect the bearings? just wiggle the rods and if they wiggle replace that one? if none wiggle and i have to manually check them... if the ones i check are fine.. can i just lube the bearing and throw it back in? or should i still use plastiguage? will i need to put new bearings in if i take them out?
i know it would be wise to just replace all the bearings since im in there.. but that is no financially possible.... i was sposto start work on MONDAY as a delivery boy for Domino's. well there goes that job. o well got some interviews lined up for starbucks and petsmart animal groomer in the next week. wish me luck... so yeah... too much digression.
so if all the bearings turn out to be okay.... what else should i check? the valve springs? i wouldnt know what a ruined valve spring looks like.. but im sure it will be obvious whence i remove the cover.
any thoughs, recommendations? thanks everyone

call Big o Tires and tell that your motor took a dump few day later after the oil change. i try that first if it go no where plan b. remove the valve cover, oil pan and check it out. if it just the main bearing the it not that hard to replace it.
Yeah and try the BBB too. Have the mechanic diagnose it and give you evidence that they fucked up.
What up I'm a driver for Domino's. Just make something up they'll still let you work there. They're desperate for drivers.

are you forgetting about the part where if it IS a main bearing, how he needs to drop the tranny to remove the crank, and then get the crank machine if it's not toast, and then possibly remove the block to get the mains line honed, if not bored.
Most like a rod bearing spun on you. Just pick up a new short block from someone...cheapest and easiest/

**** that make Big O take care of it. Let the mechanic determine that it was indeed broken due to the lack of oil. Go back to Big O, tell them you want the corporate number and that if they don't fix it you'll sue. If they still don't fix it I would call corporate and even contact some news stations. Down here in San Diego we have news programs that you can contact if you get screwed. I believe that in Cali you can even sue because the incident cost you a garuanteed job. Talk to a lawyer and find out your options and rights. Why should you go thru all the hassle and inconvenience of fixing your engine when it wasn't even your fault.
okay i dont wanna go thru all that because im lazy. i dont wanna tow it to mechanic, blah blah blah. if its just a rod bearing i can fix easily. my friend said since i threw away teh receipt i'm pretty much fucked. so on to my other questions
can i just take teh rod bearings out, inspect, and throw them back in? do i have to plastiguage it since i'm reusing them? if it is the main bearings... blah... im too lazy for that ****. i dont know what i'll do.. going to check it out tomarrow morning.... life sucks

DUDE YOUR A MORON. It sounds liek you fucked up and are now blaming it on someone else. Forgive me if i am wrong.
But if you are lazy then how the **** do you plan on ripping your motor apart?
Take that **** to the shop, and stop trying to be some macho man.

correct me if i'm wrong but I don't think you can completely change the bearings just by taking off the oil pan.
Every piston has two bearing. One for the top of where the piston meet the crank and one for the bottom. right?? Thus in order to change both bearings, wouldn't u need to take the piston out thus require u to remove the head? How the heck r u going to use plastiguage to measure the clearance between the crank and bearing? U can't just bolt in the bearing.

If in fact it is the fault of Big O and you're not going to do anything about, I can tell you that will be another fool that gets nowhere in life. If you can't stand up for yourself, /yourself. But if it was in fact your own fault you might as well come clean.
