It all depends on what you want to be able to do.. most SLR digi cams are very similar in capabilities.. just how you use it.
I have a Fuji FinePix S7000 which is fine for me it's got some SLR features .. If I had the $$ I'd go with the Nikon or the Canon digital Rebel,
Camera $599
60" Tripod $40
12" Tripod $15
Bag $40
128mb CF $50
here's some samples of mine.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the other brands, I guess it's just personal preference. Anyways, honestly I don't really think it's as much the camera but more the person using it. I've seen a lot of "professional" photographers with camera's worth more then my car that can't shoot quality images if their lives depended on it, while I've seen guys shoot with regular point and shoot cameras that put out better images. Oh well, here's the link I think you were talking about: http://www.h-tphotocrew.com.

There are a lot of great cameras in the sub $400 range that are perfect for people who just wanna snap pics. Just about any 3-4 MP camera will get the job done.
IMHO The Canon G5 & Fugi Finpix S7000 are great buys, great for shooting snapshots and enough control for the aspiring amateur
As far as DSLRs go the Canon Digital Rebel & Nikon D70 are both great buys. I'm using a Canon Digital Rebel and am more than happy w/ it, few sample shots.

Canon Elan 7E later when I get around to it/$$$ I will prolly get one of the cannon digital SLR cameras. For now im sticking to 35mm plus most places burn 35mm images to Cd for a reasonable price!
I have a Canon 10D with 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Body cost $1,499 and the lens goes for $1,299. I haven't been out shooting much because I do not have the proper filters on the camera. 77mm lens do not have alot of "cheap" filters available. Most of my images are either washed out or underexposed. I've had it for 3 weeks now. Replaced my Canon Digital Rebel, which gets my vote for most bang for the buck! Here are some images.
