Default ...so I'm driving around the track...wondering why...what the hell kind of racing is this?

Why, why...and again Why?

I don't know. I just keep doing it. Sometimes wound up tight. Sometimes mellow and bored. And sometimes...I just couldn't help but laugh out loud inside my helmet.

It was a Double Regional at Portland. First race of the year without the chicane. For me that means 9200 in 5th down to a long 3rd gear sweeper. I'd forgotten how much fun that is...and how terrifying. Gawd I just barely guestimated the ratios for my Houseman gears correctly. I'm not much for looking down at the tach in the milliseconds before I go for the brakes, but I really thought I should see it. If it were practical I'd probably have been peeking thru my fingers - I already knew I didn't want to know.

It was a very odd weekend from the start. First - I planned to run on the last of my leftover tires. Forget speed - I was out to work on the driver. I made no changes to my ridiculous setup and figured there was no point to wasting any good tires that could be better used dialing in the new setup later.

So - funked up car, crappy tires, no prospect of real speed, and iffy on somebody to race with. I know I'm kinda schizoid on winning vs enjoing and all that. And no matter what I think I think it's always a little different every time I get in the car. I admit to being as susceptible as anybody to the lure of the liturgy of racing, and I'm not immune to feelings of lostness in my apostasy. Such feelings tend to trouble me just before the braking zone for T7 - biggest roll of the dice on the track, and I guess when my mojo is in low gear I just gotta ask myself wtf I think I'm doing there.

By Sunday though my mojo was recharged and I was blissed out behind the wheel. When I wasn't shaking my head at what I was seeing in front of me...or laughing at it.

Saturdays race was notable for being the first time I've smoked grass in years. Actually it was second hand smoke from a GT4 Nissan. He went off and scooped up a bunch of grass. For a few laps I was right behind him and not enjoying the stench. Then under full course yellow he started to look like the Cheech and Chong mobile. I could imagine he was thinking to himself that it had to abate...burn off...End! But it didn't and he finally pulled off. And I breathed easier.

Restart! Not! We were all over the track and got no green. So we get the green on the next lap and somebody is really loose in front of me in the first turn, and somebody spins off in T3, and then somebody is off in 7-8-9. And all I can do is laugh. I'm not upset that these guys are screwing up our race. I'm not disgusted that they're ******* up. I just don't care. I can't win, and I can't lose. I just stay clean and tend to my skilz.

My lap times are abominable. Improving, but abominable. My best came in qualifying Saturday afternoon for Sundays race - still a second off my best. That in a session in which all the Spec Miatas were 2 seconds off their best times of the weekend. Does that mean that my corrected/normalized/handicapped laptime was actually stellar? I'm just not bench racer enough to claim it - but I can take a little comfort.

Sunday's race was more like a normal race. Or so it seemed before I went to pregrid. My tires were dead, but not showing cord. Which was good, because I'd failed to notice that the spare I'd brought was showing cord. If I had a goal for this race it was to bring the car safely home with two corded fronts.

Such modest goals. Nothing like what some of my competitors must have had. Too bad for them how it all worked out.

There was this Mustang in ITE. Giant Wing. Fast than anything else in the group. He started at the back, and blew by everyone at the start. Then he threw out the anchor for T1 and everyone almost ran over the top of him. For most of the race he held up the 5 or 6 fastest cars in the group by about 2 seconds a lap. There was dust, and tire smoke, and probably lots of cussing. But only a Porsche and an NSX got by. The upside for me was I was able to stay in touch with the front pack longer. But I was definitely feeling for the other guys. It was like I was tripping.

In impound a few guys tried to talk to the guy, but he just didn't get it. I told somebody that maybe we should all pitch in to send him to Bondurant.

My race? Completely successful. The car wouldn't turn right or left. Two corded fronts. I played with different lines, and tried anything to get the car to rotate. The thing is absolutely docile under drop throttle. Just one more thing to laugh about.

I was not laughing about T3 though. Of all the spots on the track, that's the one that I can't let go of. It's kind of tighter than 90 with an increasing radius. And I think I'm convinced that it has a steadily decreasing level of grip as you go thru it. I drove every part of it looking for something to push the front end into, and got nothing.

Years ago I remember reading some motocross jounalism that complained about a certain kind of track that was too easy - bermshot to bermshot. As it happened my favorite kind of track was a sandy winter track that was literally bermshot to bermshot. Fastest rider still won. And they could say what they wanted, but I thought it took fair amounts of both ***** and skill to come out of one and leave it nailed all the way into the next one.

That said, I can't bring myself to dislike the challenge posed by T3 at Portland. It's not something that can be solved without the brain. And despite coming up short in that department every time so far, I'm not going to give up.

It was kind of funny listening to other guys talk about it in impound. The RWD guys can't keep their rear ends behind them - Porsches naturally being the worst.

I kind of settled on Van Overbeck's hug the inside all the way around - though it was no more effective grip wise, I figured I was saving mileage. Next Time! T3 is a good thing. It's a perpetual challenge for the driver. Especially the driver that needs a little help fighting off complacency.

The rest of the weekend wasn't too bad. There was some nice hardware. Here's some pics:

If you drive to the track, and you're not lucky enough to own the worlds greatest hot hatch, you're gonna need a micro trailer. Your choices are:

Cheap store bought:

Nice homebuilt:

and Birdcage Maserati:

Nearer the other end of the spectrum are the guys with big trucks and big trailers. Of all of what I saw this weekend, by far the neatest was Andy Pearsons GT-1 Camaro. Andy has a business called Specialty Engineering, and he's built mass quantities of Gorgeous GT-3 240SX's (one of which is defending National Champion). When I look over one of his cars I'm just ga-ga:

Another neat car, that happens to be another one from Specialty Engineering, is this SPM Miata:

Gotta love those belt drive intake manifolds.

Other news: Cramer traded wins in RS with Harlan. Ron had some nice bling: VIS carbon fibre hatch, hood, and FAL rear window. The hatch/window is LIGHT! It moved up higher on my list. The hood is light too, but the savings is less dramatic. Ron's fast time of the weekend was faster than mine. Uh-oh!

Sound readings were even lower on my Lobak equiped car this weekend - 89's. Amazing. If you want a cheap, easy to fit, effective muffler - one that would probably get you thru a weekend at Laguna - this looks like IT. Still got visit the dyno though.

Scott, who's getting tired of the view...

Ah, Penske's with remote reservoirs, and those A-arms! Nice Camaro. And I can't help but admire those beautiful wheels on the Miata. Team Dynamics, what a good choice. Have you really been running your ITR motor to 9200 for 7 years? I just got mine dynoed yesterday and adjusted to 8800 max. Was I being chicken?

What is it about racing, or pursuing any other passion, that can induce such a wide array of thoughts and emotions? I'm not sure I'll ever understand this phenomenon of the human condition.... and that's ok because I love feeling -- makes me feel alive -- that is when I'm not hating these feelings at the same time....

Glad to hear you managed to enjoy yourself and avoid all the wild driving going on around you.

Casey, still laughing about the Cheech and Chong mobile. Hadn't thought about "Up In Smoke" for a very long time....

Claude,

I normally shift at around 8400 indicated. I do stretch out to 9 when I have to / want to avoid a shift. It's just the combination of my spec'd Houseman 5th and Portlands front straight without the chicane that's making it routine. Spokane on these gears is out of the question.

If I could do it all over again, I'd take a GSR box, and ITR box, and a JDM final drive, and mix and match to have the same basic box I do now but with a longer 5th than I've got now.

The stock cams and valvetrain on the ITR motor are amazing. Mine has seen 10,000 occasionally - accidentally, and hasn't popped. And either there's a secret rev limiter in the Mugen ECU, or at around 10 there's a little space for some valve float without contact.

Scott, who considers himself a chicken about revs...an occasionally dumb, lucky chicken...

I recently checked the accuracy of my ITR tach by plugging in an OBDII scanner. Value indicated on tach was about 550 RPM too high at the top of the rev range. Tach shows almost 9000 RPM when in reality it is turning at 8400-8500 and redline limiter on stock ECM is kicking in. So shifting at 8400 indicated is very conservative, since you are likely at 7900 RPM in reality. As of yesterday I have a Hondata and OBDI ECM, with a true rev limit raised to 8800 RPM, or well over 9000 as shown on tach. Must be a ploy by Honda to keep revs low and motors safe. I thought with stock valvetrain that 8800 would be the limit. Only "problem" is that with the stock valvetrain, Hytech header and exhaust and Mugen intake, car is making decent power all the way up to 8500 and does not drop off at all. With the Hytech/Mugen IHE and stock ITR ECM, power maxed out at 174 whp @ 8000 real RPM, and started to drop off after that due to over rich mixture with stock ECM and stock injectors. With the Hondata installed and tuned (plus S2000 injectors), power was 175 @8000 RPM or virtually the same, but kept going up to 181.3 @8500 RPM, with no drop. Unfortunately the Mustang dyno was not re-calibrated to run up to the new 8800 RPM redline, but since there was no drop seen below 8500, one could assume that decent power could be had above 8500 RPM on stock valvetrain. Have you ever checked the accuracy of your tach?

y'know... the carousel at little talladega is like that. It sucks b/c you know your car isn't setup properly and there's nothing you can do about it the whole weekend. You sort of resign to just taking that corner at a mellow pace, cause hitting it any harder won't do anything but heat up the fronts more.

And then other times (I autox a lot more than I track my cars - which isn't saying much), I feel like the entire autox course is one series of your turn 3. That's what I call an "off" day - and I'm sure we all have them. I pray we do! LOL Heck, even pro baseball players sometimes can't hit... sometimes.....

Hey Scott, looking for some more Oomph?
Itching to scrap with the big guys in SPO?

I'm finally thinking of parting with some goodies (just so I could eventually re/build a better "mousetrap").

Ed,

You know how a sidecar monkey hangs off? That's kind of how I view the practical value of being somewhat out of my mind. Buying your setup would be like leaping off the bike entirely.

Scott, who thinks a JRSC has a greater chance of finding it's way under my hood someday when I can afford a disposable motor...

Hehe ...yeah, especially right next to the stone walls and embankments of/during the Isle of Man TT side car races!!!!!!

Ed ... who says it's been years since he had tunnel vision on the track.

Oh, if you're thinking "disposable motor", then I wouldn't even consider it.
Just build it right the first time (as they say), and provide plenty of oil/radiator/brake cooling.

But harbor freight sells something similar - 3x4' utility trailer that you can setup to take tires and tools.

There used to be a company that made a purpose built track trailer - they were called South Sport - but they seem to be out of business. I think they were selling theirs for around $800 - maybe more.

Alot of these little trailers come from a trip to Home Depot. The little trailer, the weatherproof job box, and the hardware to put together a tire rack.

The one you copied was made from scratch by a metal fab guy - and he said that what he had into it in time and money was ridiculous.

Scott, who thinks driving to the track is crazy...and so is racing..."it's just not responsible behavior"...
