Default first expierence with shifter karts

a track buddy has had a couple of these shifter karts sitting for about 6 months. I think he is getting ready to sell them (maybe to me ) so he wanted to get them up and running all nice for the potential buyer. He asked me to give them a little tune up and as payment i could go out for a couple days and beat the hell outa them at the local kart track.. long story short, got them up and running, and took them out around the neighborhood for a little test drive......
first impresssions? H-O-L- Y SHIIIIIIT!!!
In the words of gordan elliot, "the acceleration is unbelieveable" its like a street bike on 4 wheels.
going out to the local kart track this week to realy drive them, If there is anything closer to an F1 car for under 10grand please let me know . i am in love

Saw one of those get on 2 wheels with about 8" of air under them at the Peru Tour this past weekend. Holy **** is right.

Ive had mine for a while now. Id love to take it out to the kart track but cant every other weekend. There is nothing close to the acceleration and cornering speed of a kart. beside high dolar stuff. and I built mine cost 2500 bucks.

yah, im not used to going that fast without harness and a cage. really scary for me.
on a side note i think i can get both of these for about 5 grand. not sure if its a good deal or not, but i think he paid 7 new. i would defiently like to build one though. they are so easy to work on!

$5000 for both of those is cheap! Looks like one of those is a Birel with a TonyKart steering wheel while the other looks like a rotax package on a TonyKart. Can't really tell though. If you ever get the chance to road race a shifter...do it. Going 120 mph in a kart 1" off the ground is fun. At Summit Point, were flat from T1 to T5 and from T5 to T1 again. Only two braking zones. Taking T3 flat for the first time is a little hairy.

Get the karts. Won't find a better bang for the buck...but don't get me wrong, it's still expensive.

shifters are more expensive to run IMO.

if u'r looking for something that gives you a rush but won't damage your road racing budget, get a rotax. it's not AS fast, but it's still a ton of fun.

that's what i ended up doing for $$$$ reasons. shifters just cost way too much to keep with on a week to week basis.

This is true. Motors are sealed, easy to be competitive, and I think you can go 200-300 hours in between rebuilds. That saves thousands of dollars right there.

Good luck,

AJ

you'd be lucky to get 40 hours.

the manual says 50 hours, but only if you leave the settings as stock. once you start messing with jets and sprocket sizes (and frankly, who doesn't when they wnat to be competitive), the engine life decreases as expected.

Stok settings only go up to about 12,800 or so. Right now i'm screaming mine at around the 14k mark.

By reputation, these aren't the most bulletproof of engines

Yes.

a 250cc Shifter kart.

Scary, fun, nerve-wrecking, euphoric, dizzy, woody, nausous, incredible.

all words that describe racing a shifter kart.

and racing a shifter kart costs more to get into than a car. but, it's cheaper in the long run. $100 for a set of tyres lasts you 3-4 races. $75 ring set (which can last a 100hrs). practice days are anywhere from $10-$35 for x amount of hours. easier to insure. it's an exercise machine of its own. plus, very few F1 drivers have ever come from club racing.

superkarts will run you north of the 10g mark to get started.

the power to weight ratio of those runs JUST shy of an Atlantic; so one better knows what one is doing before hopping into one of those.

Yah go karts are so much fun! I test drove my bro's 80cc and I had hell of good time at the track in Beaumont, CA Then he sold it and bought a 125cc.... I gotta try that when they go to the track again My bro said its so much faster than the 80cc

I'll take pics of it when I get home

Hell ya they're awesome! Hope to see you guys out at the Bondurant kart tracks more (provided we don't all go and get ourselves a kart first!). Every wednesday (6:30 - 9:30). It'll help ease the track addiction of not being on the track during the summer Have fun at Willow this weekend!

Oh Tony, when you get your kart running again, I'd love to hit the kart tracks with ya. Do they rent these things around town?

Once I get around to it, I'll be runnin' my kart at the local drag strip. I just need to install a kill switch and I should be good to go. All ready talked to the owners about it and gave me the OK.

Later,

AJ

yes, WKC still charges $10 per head to get in the gate
last time I went I was treated to a "show" of an empty track because there were a few sprinkles

I'll be running in the fifth heat on Saturday and the fourth on Sunday. Races start at 11am. So I should run at around 2pm and 12pm respectively. The races are 30 minutes each. And yes it costs $5-$10 a head to get in.

Also, I talked to the head honchos at my local dragstrip tonight about running the kart. They are now saying that I can't run it. NHRA only allows 3 wheelers and ATV's but no karts. Too bad.
