Overheating Question
Whenever I get up to around 70-80 miles and hour the temperature gauge starts to increase to like 3/4 up the gauge depending on how long I stay at that speed. It normally reads at around the 1/4 mark at speeds under and depending on ambient temperature. Any suggestions on what could be the problem. I've checked the coolant level and its normal and the coolant looks clean and both radiator fans work. It's a '97 accord lx special edition.
i pushed it a little faster to see what would happen and it goes to like same position on the gauge for speeds higher than 80 as well. do you know where the sensor is located?
Don't overheat your engine
If both fans kick on and the fluid looks ok; my only guess would be the thermostat:
if you find the radiator hose at the top of the radiator it runs into the engine block into a housing; that is your thermostat housing, the thermostat is in there.
What color is your coolant btw ?

The t-stat is at the end of the bottom radiator hose. Sounds like that is his problem to me too.

I replaced the thermostat with a new one but didn't solve the problem. However, when I did turn the heat on the temp dropped back down to normal. What could this be?
DO you have the A/C on while you are doing this? mine kind of did this same thing while driving to Chicago. Does you temp keep going up or does it just stay at a higher level?

Never used the A/C because I bought the car about a month ago used and the guy said it didn't work. Think the refrigerant might just be spent on it. And the highest i let it go was 3/4 up the gauge then i slowed down quite a bit until it cooled back down as not to overheat the engine.

Since the T-stat is new, it's starting to look like a fouled radiator.
Expired coolant is bogus. That just means it's corrosion protection is 'used up'. It'll still work fine as a coolant. But it's allowed some corrosion to happen in your cooling system. Now you might have to get some SuperFlush or some such stuff to clean out your cooling system. Maybe even replace the radiator if that stuff doesn't help.
Turning on the AC will force your fans to run. But driving 70mph pushes more air than the fans anyway, so I bet that won't change anything.

I agree with JimBlake. It sounds like flushing the radiator good do some good.I have also heard to mix your coolant and water about 50/50 instead of all coolant.I don't know how true that is

Pure water is even a better coolant than 50/50. But pure water doesn't have any corrosion inhibitors, & it freezes easier.

The guy I bought the car from (being family so have no reason to doubt him) said he got the radiator and whole system flushed regularly. I haven't seen any leaks. And the coolant/water is a 50/50 mix. Although heard its safe to do a 40/60 which helps run cooler without corrosion still but to lazy to get to crazy with measurements. So far haven't had too many problems so I think the thermostat helped. ntm its been a really hot freaking month that certainly didn't help. Thanks for all the helps and suggestions though.

The forum and I just got done trouble shooting my car's overheating problem. I bought a STANT thermostat from Kragen and it was one of the two reasons why my car overheated. The thermostat wasn't allowing fresh coolant to pass by coolant temperature switch A to trigger the fans and believe it or not the thermostat was working intermittenly. I bought a HONDA OEM thermostat and my car stopped overheating. Everything else on my car had been replaced.
Does the lower hose feel way cooler than the upper hose? The lower hose should feel only a little cooler.
