when the motor brushes wear down the 'pusher' spring will keep making contact on the armature.
I've also seen aftermarket fan motors that have too hard of a brush and you can hear the brush going over the armature plates.
The bottom line is, as long as the fan is running don't sweat it. They aren't worth rebuilding anyway.

It could be hitting something?

I got a 96 EX as well.
Its the fan rubbing on the engine mount. See for yourself. Shut it off and spin the pass. side fan by hand, you'll hear it lightly scrape. Follow the top of the radiator and there's two little nubs that support the radiator. Jam some toothpicks in there or something to pull it back away from the mount. You only need a little bit of clearance.
Hope this helps. Nuisance I know but its not gonna hurt anything.

Schmitey you hit the nail on the head! the toothpicks didnt work for me tho. i ziptied the radiator to the rad support in an attempt to hold it in a more forward position but it didnt work either. im just gonna shave off a couple of mm from the tip of the guilty fan blade..or should i do all to keep it balanced??
