it depends on the product you're making , and going even further there are different weave patterns that come into play.

i'm a big fan of 2x2 but i think they both do look nice.... depends on what it is i'm thinking for bigger things the 2x2 is def nicer and maybe for smaller parts were the diagonal effect won't stand out the 1x1 would probably look nicer IMO
as far as strength, im pretty sure the 1x1 would be more rigid, where the 2x2 would be more flexible due to the different weave patterns. not likely that you would ever put that much force on it to find out,; they would behave exactly the same unless under large loads.
