Default 18+ psi and 94octane = bad day....

I finally got around to posting my pistons from my built prelude motor i blew up last fall trying to see just how far you can go with pump gas.
9.5:1 88mm Arias.

3 of them melted all on the intake side. one melted at 2 points.

tuning was dead on in A:F and timing was fairly conservative. Ran 400HP at 16psi.

GE Sleeves look ok. Will be measuring today to see if I destroyed them.

Lesson be learned.

wow! cracked/melted the piston dome! 18psi was bad on pump... but 16psi is safe? just trying to fully understand the lesson, seems kinda close...

well Torin, I'll be seeing you again soon I hope, but I don't think we will go past 15psi on pump... although I still have two chips from you, maybe we can tune one for race gas

bump for more info... what happened, and how could this have been prevented (i.e., how would you have known where the limit of pump gas is before going to far)?

The piston manufacturer is not the problem (yes I know design makes a difference), I've seen JE's do the exact same. Unlike B series, H series have a lower MSBC. That means you can only get away with so much power while being safe before you start introducing your motor to dangerous conditions. Generally you only want to run up to 350whp on them with pump gas, anything after that you really really need a higher octane fuel. You can see why with the above pictures. Lots of people don't listen to me when I tell them this by the way, and every single time they decided to prove me right.

The H series also have weaker ignitions, so you cannot get away safely with a stock ignition system for high horsepower applications. Anything over 330whp I strongly recommend a better ignition system to prevent the misfire that happens up top.

Stupidest thing i have ever heard. Arias is a proven manufacturer of pistons, you can't blame someone's mistake on the piston. You must have been looking to get a flaming.

well he screw'd up or he can't drive cause I know someone running 18psi with the 9.5:1 arias pistons using pump gas. Actually in Milwaukee WI there's a few H22 running the same setup on pump gas.

dude, what the hell does that mean? same PSI + different turbo size = DIFFERENT WHP

these dudes in Milwaukee are probably running around with baby turbo's...

Aside from that, in efforts to try and keep this technical, does anyone have good links or info about limits on pump gas? (I'm interested in B series)

How close can you go to the limit and still be "safe"? what exactly defines the limit?

Sorry if this is thread jacking...
