Confused about d15b
Ok, my girlfriend just bought a 93 Civic with a swap. I've read a lot about the d15b but there are some things I'm confused about. OK, the dealership performed the swap and have the paperwork for it and everything. They said it was a JDM engine. The stamp on the block just has D15B. The spark plugs are facing the firewall and there is no VTEC soleniod, but there seems to be a cooper block off plate where the VTEC soleniod would have gone. Is there supposed to be a plate there? I know that the "good" JDM D15b is supposed to have the spark plugs facing the frontside of the car, but is there anyway to tell the "good" D15B from the "OK" D15B?
my understanding is that the dseries were only sold in north america, can anyone confirm this? And that copper plate sounds kind of shady, what kind of mom and pop mechanics work at that dealer, I would get fired if I did anything like that

that is not true...there is a JDM d15b and i THINK a jdm d16a1 (not sure) but as for your situation...i doubt its the JDM d15 its probably a d15b7 or 8 (LX and CX models) i doubt a dealership would perform a JDM swap on a (im assuming) non-vtec vehicle...its probably an LX/DX motor

if its just stamped D15B, then it is a JDM D15B. it is equipped with SOHC VTEC, and is supposed to have a vtec solenoid. i doubt the dealership even knew that its a VTEC motor, so they probably never hooked up the VTEC.

ok, they did sell a crb'd d15b in the 85-87 jdm civics that are stamped d15b. if the plugs are on the back side of the motor then thats the onw you got. sorry man. no performance motor there. oh, and that block off plate is used to run the mechanical fuel pump on the carb'd motor
The "D15B" stamp was on both the SOHC VTEC 130ps engine
AND
the Keihen Carb Equiped SOHC NON VTEC VTEC 105 ps engine
They import these by the dumpload and use the long block as a "rebuild alternative" by many shops
the copper block off plate it proly the Fuel PUMP block
"Don't step to me
can't phaze this!!!!"

I got the same bullshit story when I bought my car. It's quite possible that you got the 88-91 ? d15 non vtec and all the hard parts like IM ect were swapped over. It really means that your swap was simply a stock replacement.
I believe if you go to many motor suppliers and ask for a DX LX motor this is what you will get
another possibility is you got the vtec motor and some parts were switched

what r u talking about. they made the "d15b" in all diferent variations. cause as we all should know by now jdm motors dont have the last # on the engine code. what gave it away that this was an older motor was the block off plate for the mech. fuel pump. motors stamped "d15b" can range from 1985-1998 in jdm form, there are things to look at. like he said, the plugs are on the backside of the valvecover. theres a block off plate in the area of the vtec solenoid. 2 main keys to decide what motor this is. more than likely this came out of an 85-89 jdm civic that was carb'd, and the cx manifolds and whatnot were swapped over because all your essentialy using is the block and head.
