Default Timing Belt- Miles/ time or both??

My 93 LX accord has an interesting history.

In its first year (93-94) it did 60,000 miles (was a company fleet vehicle).
94-99 the second owner put in only 30,000 miles
He changed the timing belt at 90,000 miles in 1999.
From 1999-date (when i bought it) he did just 17,000 miles.
Now it has 107,000 miles on it.

My Honda dealer (who else!!) hinted to me that I may need to change my timing belt again sometime next year. His reasoning was that although the new belt has only 17,000 miles it will be 6 yrs old next yr, and "HONDA RECCOMENDS CHANGING BELTS 90,000 MILES/ EVERY 6 YEARS"

Is this true? I have never heard this crap before.

Any suggestions

Why the hell would you listen to them, don't you do research or ask around.

This is what my buddy who is pretty cool w/ cars has to say

"people suggest changing timing belts 60,000miles or 6 years because they assume the average american drives 10,000miles per year. now, yes, make sure the timing belt is not cracked. but i go by every 60,000miles not by time. anyway, most of you guys have non interference engines so if t-belt breaks it is most likely all good but i wouldn't go that far.

I guess he should know better than the big car companies and their engineers.

Happened to me once. Lost 2 cylinder heads and there were pieces of rocker arms all over the place. I would suggest using time and mileage as a factor. You just never know.

mozzy- the new compound honda use for timing belt is so good that you will not see a crack even if it's dying. so if you think you'll wait for the crack to show up, DONT, you'll end up bending valves
