Default New to tuning.....need advice

Hopefully someone out there can help me with this.......I recently got a 1990 CRX Si, and I'm really lost as far as tuning goes. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on the best place to start as far as modifications to the car. I don't have a lot of extra cash to dump into it right now, so what I'm looking for is the biggest power and handling gains for the least amount of money. Eventually I'd like to do a motor swap, but right now that's out of the question, so I'm looking for the next best thing until then. Also, if anyone can provide me with the names of some decent shops in the Baltimore/Annapolis area or some decent parts suppliers it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Im not some guru in tuning but i would say invest in making sure that engine is in good shape like plugs, belt, alternator, oil change, all your fluids that type of stuff. Then invest in intake. Probably best bang for buck. It sounds nice and helps out in gas mileage

Look my edvice is to Pop a B16 into there you'll drop from 16.7 to like a 13.5 13.7 defientley the best option if u trying to get the best power then after that then u Can put intake exaust Etc.Etc

EDIT: I meant b18 sorry. The 13's I spoke of were also best case scenario

those times would be nice. wtf is wrong with mine then? it only does 15.5. unless your tanlking lsd tranny and slicks. sorry to steal your thread.
a simple ebay brand intake with a good k&n filter. also for your suspension and what not get a hyperflex prourathane bushing kit for it. its like $100 bucks or so.

Will the intake really help all that much if I leave the stock exhaust on it, or will I need to upgrade that at the same time to really have a noticeable gain?

The combo of the intake and exhaust will be optimal performence. The gain should be noticable but it anit gonna be all that much anyway maybe 12-15 crank hp

Honestly it will help more in gas if anything. U will only see big gains out of intake if its combined with i/h/e. At best intake alone 5hp.

sell the car and buy a metro, you'll have money to burn then
Otherwise i say forget "1/4 mile" etc. CRX's are fun great handling lil cars and you aren't racing anyone. racing is for people with money, and you have none so you will fail at it.

I've known more people to be impressed by the power a good race/street clutch gives then VS the laggy weak stock clutch.

Good intake, 30$ shipped from ebay, no name brand horseshit, its just an intake. And if its chrome, make sure your battery never arch's it. i oops.. my lil "PPP" (plastic positive protector) wore through once.

And the only reason to ever have loud exhaust is when you dont have a CAT or muffler cuz its straight pipe. And thats almost what you should do. remove the rear axle back and bolt on a straight pipe.

A D-series 1.6 can make a shitload of power. If yours isnt 1.6 Look for an SI motor being thrown away cuz they're going B-series. ****** it up and do your own home port and polish job on it. Many websites out there describing the process.

Also in your hunt for CRX parts at junkyards, keep in mind the EBAY value of all the lil parts of CRX's.. the center light, the relays and fuses, the speaker holders make money off each visit. I do! i've sold sunroofs. power mirrors from Civics. its all good! found it, bought it for 20$, sold it for 200. and taking **** apart is so much fun.

Thanks for all the advice. Love the junk yard idea , lots of great ones in the area, so I know where I'll be Fri. after I cash the ol' paycheck! Hate the loud exhaust anyway....sounds like someone punched a hole in the muffler with a damn screwdriver or something. Do you recomend the short ram or full cold air intake?

Not looking for huge race-car type HP, just enough to shut people up.

i would recommend the CAI only if it doesnt flood where you live and if it does i recommend the AEM Air Intake Valve. An excellent buy, i know people that destroyed their engines by sucking water. Personally on my rex i made a fiberglass air scoop from my mugen front end up through the hole. I just have a ram air. It's fine for my application, which is chillin like a villin
