Stock or aftermarket deck?
When I bought this car about a week ago there was no face to the deck. I found out it is stock. So I have a stock deck with no face right now. I am debating if I should get a replacement face from "packshack" that makes replacment faces for stock decks, or should I get a cheap aftermarket one. I have no idea what brand or model I would get for aftermarket. I was told that the sound difference from a stock deck to a aftermarket is quite large. Is this true? Will any deck fit in my 1996 HX Civic?
packshack?? what the hell is that? curious....
but yeah, any din-sized (normal) radio will fit, and yes the sound difference is usually worth it with any reputable manufacturer....

Many of you guys have the same car as me, what does the stock system sound like? Packshak: I have never been there, but it is local to me. I was recommended to go there for my situation from a guy at ultimate electronics. I am looking for a clean (non-ricey) deck that will match the stock interior. Of course cost is what I am trying to save here, I need to go see the difference between a fairly cheap aftermarket deck would compare (in price and sound) to the replacement I can get at pack shack.
check crutchfield cause they give you the parts (dash kit and harness) free. i install for a national retail store (feel free to guess but ill be nice and not say due to me suggesting crutchfield
) and we have very good basic decks starting around $100 (jvc, not that great IMO), $110 (panasonic, very good if you like the looks), $110 (pioneer, not that good anymore but sound good), $110 (sony, usually good, crappy "feel" though....). but you have to add about $40 for the kit and harness. im not saying we have the best deals, just giving some options.... and i know we have a few more for under $100, but installation is included if its over $100. shop around
how much is the packshack option?

There is a difference - I've found a decent aftermarket deck does sound cleaner, have way more internal power for main speakers (if you don't want the cost and weight of having an external amp for those).
I prefer Pioneer decks for sound quality, features (I like the three-band, quasi-parametric eq, even on the entry level units), and reliability.
Funny thing is, a lot of crappy OEM Honda radios are made by Pioneer - but the aftermarket units sound different.

Make sure you hold on to your stock radio or you will lose your dome light and the option to add a keyless entry. I put my old Sony X-Plod deck in my HX and didn't realize about the security stuff until it was already installed, so I had to pull everything and install my stock radio into the space behind the cup holders by splicing the power wires and running a new ground. I'm adding keyless to mine as soon as I get my remote shipment.
i've always had good experiences with kenwood excelon decks, i am currently running a high end clarion (the one below the dvd player), i also have a plain jane kenwood i have been tryin to sell.. $50 shipped.
you can retain the dome light by connecting the lt. green/black and lt. green/ red wires on the other harness behind the radio, and dont need the fact. radio in there at all. but , yes if you have keyless then you need to keep the radio in there

how the hell can you have a ricey deck? "y0 y0 dawg, fo sho I gotz eur0z and glow on da cd playa!" psyche that's gay. A cd player is a cd player just 'cause someone else's is better doesn't mean it's rice.

I guess your right, but even if I were to get a expensive deck (which I may in the future) I would get a high quality non-super blinky deck. Most of the expensive decks out there are too blinky/lighted etc for my taste.
Ok, I'm going to take a stab at this one, since this is something I actually somewhat know about. If I'm wrong about anything, feel free to correct/flame me.
First off, stock decks ushally aren't that great sounding. There are good sounding stock decks but they most of the time include external amplifers and tweeters. But then even if you crank it up to loud the speakers will probally blow pretty easily. For example, the stock Eclipse speaker system.
Stock speakers don't take to much wattage either, which watts aren't really as important as most people seem to think when it comes to having a good system, but to a certain extent higher wattage is ushally louder.
It all depends on what you want out of your car really. If you don't really care that much about good/loud sound you can use your stock one but don't expect to much from it. But if you want something that makes really really good sound you can pay more and get an amazing system
If you do decide to go for the high quality sound heres some stuff I reccomend.
Pioneer deck (I don't reccomend sony because I have heard MANY storys about the internal amplifers going out and about them heating up really bad. Plus the lower end models look pretty retarted)
For speakers: Infinity(Great speakers), Pioneer(Ok speakers),
And basically anything you can get at best buy will be OK. Just don't expect the best sounding speakers if you get them at best buy.
If you decide to go with a sub, which really isn't bad in a Civic because I don't think you can really get that much bass out of 5 1/4s
Rockford Fosgate amp, ahh I don't know what else really. Just stay away from off brand crap.
For subs: Elemental designs, rockford fosgate, JBL
(Stay away from Audiobahn or any of the cheap subs on ebay, they sound like **** and there wattage limit are WAY over-rated)
And if you do subs, please don't over do it. 1 10 inch will bring out the bass without making the people in the car next to you deaf.
And last reccomendation, get your stuff off ebay. But, get the good brands. You can get everything to do with sound systems a lot cheaper on there. I forget what the markup is for sound items at places like Circut City and Best Buy, but they rape you.
NOTE 1: Don't forget that the more audio stuff you put in your car, the more its going to weigh. I've heard of people on sound message boards adding well over 500 pounds to there car with there speakers systems
NOTE 2: I know I way overdid this post, but I figure this might help someone out in the future

I am mostly looking for a decent deck right now, once I get a deck I can judge the quality of the stock speakers. Thanks for the information however, it may help me in the future.
crutch field is over priced.... Try http://www.savinglots.com or http://www.millionbuy.com
