*best* Auto tranny?
I know that doesn't make sense....lol....
But I'm putting a SOHC ZC into my GF's 91 DX Auto hatch and would like to switch to MPFI but also put in a better D series Auto tranny if it exists.
I'm not sure if they are all the same from 88-2000? I know the Manuals are different because the 92+ are hydro but shouldn't make a difference in the auto tranny?
Just looking to see if anyone knows of a better geared auto tranny...this one kinda shifts hard and lags.
Not switching it to 5speed either so that ain't an option and I don't want to hear it. :D
Thanks!

Not to ***** your thread, but I'm looking for the same info. I've got a D15B2 auto tranny I want to strengthen for towing my other EF cross country... From what I understand its the torque converter that you need to worry about.
I started to do a little research into this swap myself. I gave up after finding out this bit of information.
I doesnt appear that you can use a '92 or later civic A/T in a a pre 92 civic because '92 and up civics use a two stage electronically controlled torque converter. And the 88-91 Civics use a one stage. (ECU is OBD0)
You would need an AUTO ECU from a '92 and up civic,( OBD1, BTW) with the two-stage solenoid outputs AND the wiring from the ECU to A/T solenoids plus their connectors.
Anymore questions hit me up. I'll tell you what else I found out, if I can.

Gonna have to sick to Pre-'92 civic A/T trannys here.
If your talking 88-91 Civics..... NO 88-91SI's had an A/T ...... They were 5 sp only.
Only DX, LX..........

Good luck finding an "strong" tranny.
I killed an auto tranny and found out that it's common for a plate inside the tranny to become unfastened and begin spinning around in there. That happened to mine. No gears worked except sometimes if you slapped it into reverse and returned to drive. Then it would go until you took your foot off the gas. Left me stranded.
I wouldn't tow anything with it very far.
On the other hand, I turned around and replaced that ttranny with a remanufactured tranny from Honda. I guess they got all the bugs worked out of it. I abused that thing for 160,000 miles and it wouldn't break! Never slipped or anything and I was MEAN to it.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons they didn't put them in the Si's, Hondas early A/T's sucked *****. They were notoriously bad. Couldn't handle any stress.
But I had heard the new ones have gotten better.
Yeah I wouldn't tow a bicycle with a Honda A/T car LOL

You are correct, sir. According to my '90-'91 Canadian Honda brochures, ALL Civics in Canada had the option of A/T EXCEPT The STD, and the CRX Si.

ok i have done this swap its in my g/fs 89 four door with the d15b2 tranny this swap sucks there isnt hardly any noticable gain but on another note the si crxes did come with the option of auto tranny here in the U.S. and the computer you will need for this swap is a ps9 and be ready to make a bracket for the vaccum shift selonoid for the tranny and you have to have it perfect or it wont shift right...but on the the questions about the tranny if you can find the si tranny its generally a good price on them.... so you can take them to a transmission shop and have them rebuild it like its an si tranny but they ask you for you vin # on the car so you will need the vin number and all that good stuff......in other words it sucks to do this swap and if you do it and you find a better way to do the tranny let me know thanks Jeremy 89 4 dr d15b2 block z6 head obd2 intake manifold with ls throttle body and still has no power due to tranny i believe
