Default Exhaust system & Cat that will pass smog

Okay, well I failed my smog test with a stock catalytic and exhaust system (and stock motor). The car is an 88 CRX Si. What I am looking to do now is get an new exhaust system from the catalytic. but...

It needs to pass smog in california (visual, emissions, all of it...).

What would you recomend for both the catalytic and exhaust? I'm not familiar with cats, but exhausts I was thinking of Greddy or Thermal.

Any information is much appreciated...oh and any information regarding shops that will do the install too would be great (So. Cal - Irvine).

Thanks.

How is your car going to pass smog with an aftermarket exhaust/cat if it didn't pass with a stock exhaust/cat?

Anyway, I'll vouch for the Greddy SP catback. That's what I have.

Not sure if it'll pass smog though. Smog is the suck.

Greddy exhaust is carb legal so unless you have a bad cat, it should pass...I have a Greddy SP/Catco catalytic.

Thanks guys.

I think the only reason that I failed my emissions is because the catalytic is the original one (from 1988). So replacing that with a new cat should work out. I just figured I would replace the exhaust system as well.

Any other recommendations for cats?

a new cat may help but it would be really helpful if we knew what you failed on. i.e. HC NOx CO etc.

sorry, i don't have the readings with me right now, I will post them up once i get home. would a cat-back exhaust effect the readings much if i put in a new cat?

I would stay away from putting on a Hi Flow Cat.

I have one in mine, and right now I can't pass the NOx. So, I'm looking for a stock cat too.

yeah, i guess using the pace setter is not a good idea since it is high flow. i just want a direct fit bolt on cat instead of the universal ones where welding is involved.

Likewise, I'm trying to find the same cause I am going to put it on myself.

Just for Laughs, I went to Honda in Costa Mesa, they priced a Cat at $700-800!

TO pass emissions in AZ, I used to mix a quart of denatured alcohol w/ 1/4 tank of gas. Try that and see if it works.

Okay guys here are my failed emission test results, i failed the NO (ppm) test:

NO (PPM)
mph - max - ave - meas
15 MPH - 889 - 237 - 924 <!-- failed here
26 MPH - 828 - 199 - 799

I left work early today to get a generic cat put on and go get it smogged again and I PASSED! - here are my results after putting in a new cat and o2 sensor:

NO(PPM)
mph - max - ave -meas
15 MPH - 889 - 237 - 845
25 MPH - 828 - 199 - 80

So that's that. I am still looking to get a cat-back exhaust. But i'm just relieved that I passed smog, not by much, but still...

Hope this helps other people. Any other tips on lowering HC, CO & NO levels?

Thanks!

you should have water coming out of ur exhaust pipe, if your cat is working properly. HC through cat = h2O

It was a bolt-in, but the cat itself had to be welded to adjust it's length. After that, they just bolted it in. I got it from Kragen in Santa Ana - it was about $80.

that water is probably just the water in the gas.. i think i read somewhere that they mix our gas 20% water, 80% fuel + additives if you got em.
