Default help me decide...

I have a 93 vtec with 240,000 miles. the car runs great still(I can still go 120mph
without any real effort) but the problem is that it burns and leaks oil like mad. about once a week I add 1 quart of oil and little bit of "no smoke" additive. I drive about 350~400miles a week. mostly freeway. my gas mileage is about 22 mpg.

my mechanic said he will rebuild my engine for $1900(only engine rebuild ,does not include tranny rebuild) or he says I can get used engine for $2200 + $750(labor) which comes with tranny and all the external engine items, distributer,pw steering pump, ac pump, etc... but I really don't need all the extra stuff but at the same time thay are newer than what I have now so it might be worth it ?!

so here is my question, do I rebuild my engine only(by the way, he offered 2 years warranty and no oil leak) or do I get a used engine/tranny with all the external parts(3 to 6 month warranty.I know, less warranty and more money.) or do I sell my car as is and buy something else ??

I've sort of been looking at other cars but most cars look and feel like crap compared to our prelude in terms of performance, reliability, mpg, handling, well you get my picture. but somehow is300(18 mpg, ****!) and civic si HB looks interesting.

This doesn't even apply too much of reasoning, get an engine swap from a reputable source and swap the engine yourself with help from locals from this site and call it a day.

You should not spend more than $2400 at most for this swap.

DO THE SWAP ON YOUR OWN

how many miles on the used engine and tranny? how is your current tranny? What all would he replace in the rebuild process? I would probably go with the rebuild depending on your answers to these questions.

it depends on whats making you burn oil. i would find out what the real problem is first. then i would make my decision form there.

yeah oil burning can be very tricky! I would go with the swap then buy a helms manuelk and swap it your self.

take some time and search for a good longblock that you can swap out. then do it yourself.

realistically if you are a little patient you could get this all done for around $1300

thanks, you guys are asking good questions.
I was told by my mechanic(ex acura mechanic) that most of burning oil can be fixed by replaceing "valve stem guide seal(which is basically an o ring) and it's about $500 to get it done. he says this is common for high miles engine. piston blow by can also cus too much oil to burn but I don't think this is the main problem cus the engine still has good power(I'm guessing). and as far as oil leak, it just plain leaks little bit from everywhere it looks like.

oh, I tryed to replace oil pan gasket a couple months ago and get this I removed all the hardware that holds the oil pan in place and I pryed the oil pan open but the freaken thing won't drop cus my freaken b pipe is slightly bent up !

considering all things, I think I'm going towards used engine and tranny swap(less than 50K miles) cus my tranny does grind a little going into third(it had been doing this ever since 50k miles). If I had the tools or the knowhow I would do it myself but I don't so I'll probably take it to a shop and get it done.

but if someone from this board want to do it to make some extra cash let me know.
you need to be in LA area though. I'm planning to do it within 2 or 3 months.

by the way, can you really feel the difference between the 200hp JDM compared to 190hp motor ??

thanks.

hahaha, is anyone here from LA?!?!

keep posting, reading and searching. by this time next month you should be at HT member status. then you will be able to go into GDD. make a thread in there simply stating you will compensate someone for their time if they help you do the swap. explain your situation, i.e. no tools etc etc. it will cost you more then say having someone come over to supervise you doing it, but an engine swap is an engine swap.

i gaurentee that someone on HT is willing to help you out for some $$.
