Tach signal?

Tach signal?
I want to make my own shift light, a multi stage one. I need to know what type of signal goes to the tach. Is it like pulses that range in frequency or is it an analog voltage? Any input would be great!

I'm pretty sure it's analog voltage but I'm not 100% sure.
Get a multimeter to it and check the voltage - you're gonna have to do this anyway (if it is analog voltage) or do some good research to see what voltage (or ratio) corresponds to RPM's so you can make a circuit with relays and leds, and all that nice stuff.
