As long as we are talking about roll cages.
15.5.11 Rear Braces
The main hoop must have two (2) braces extending to the rear. The braces shall be
attached as near as possible to the top of the main hoop, and no more than six (6)
inches below the top. The braces must not contain any bends. There must be at
least 30 degrees between the plane of the main hoop and the plane of the rear braces.
The main hoop rear braces shall be installed to form no more than a one hundred five
(105) degree angle or no less than a seventy (75) degree angle with the main hoop
when viewed from the top. The main hoop braces may be mounted at the rear shock
mounts or suspension pickup points (providing that the braces remain in compliance with
all other sections of the CCR). They may go through any rear bulkheads provided the
bulkhead is sealed around the cage braces.
When viewed from the top the rear supports for the main hoop of the roll cage CANNOT be more than 15 degrees off a line extending 90 degrees to the rear, when extending to the rear mounts.
Do your "X" rear supports meet this requirement??
PS.. SCCA has no rule about this and allows "X" supported main hoops.

Doesn't the fact that there must be two brace bars make the X illegal in SCCA also.

Because at the center of the X, there is only one bar. And Also don't those bars have to be one piece. The X kind of makes that impossible.

I spoke with the Head guy at SCCA Tech via their website discussion page, and he said it was legal.

I'm totally with you on this one, Walt. That's one of the scarier things that I've seen in recent years. It's just plain dumb from a torsional stiffness point of view, too since the cross-sectional area of the cage structure at that point is about 2.5 sq. in.

Both points brought to the attention of the head guy at SCCA tech. He says the bars don't have to be one piece. The X is OK. And won't comment to the "one bar at the center of the X" position.
NASA says X is illegal because of the 15 degree off straight back rule for the main hoop supports.
