Default how can a compression test tell...

my car smokes when im coming to a stop or while stopped at a light. it seems as if the smoke is sort of a whitish color but im not sure. By doing a compression test on my car, what am i looking for in order to know wether i hace a ring problem or bad valve stem seals. Again during acceleration the car does not smoke at all, and the car seems to run hard and pull through the gears

if the smoke is white it can be oil or the headgasket.

although all the probs ive had with head gaskets, my car would over heat. some experience this some dont. i think a leak down test would help u more in the head and valve area then a compresion test. i would do both if u have access to.
