Default Opinions: Which is better SOHC or DOHC ZC?

The reason why I am asking is because I am considering purchasing one but im not sure which would be better. Im looking for good over all power, good aftermarket support, and reliabilty. I've heard a lot of things, good and bad about the DOHC version, but not that much about the single cam. All I really know is that the dual makes 129hp while the single puts out 120. On one website they are selling the dohc for $130.00 more than the single and I can't justify spending the extra cash for just 9hp without a good reason. Any input or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

After realizing my DOHC ZC was blown I decided to go back to D-series. What I hated about the ZC is parts. Honda could never get ahold of the genuine ZC parts so they gave me the equivalent, which never fit.

130 bucks for 9 horsepower shouldnt have to be justified. if you really think that slapping that APC muffler is gonna give you 15 horsepower for 99 bucks you gotta wake up. I have owned 3 zcs and never had problems, parts are just as readily available for it. Cams, LS valvetrain conversion, Turbo kits, internals. You just cant look in super street for ZC parts. ZC also has alot more torque than a single cam and doesnt weigh much more, but if 130 dollars is to much for you, you might as well leave you stock motor in

It's not just the money. Is it just as reliable as the sohc? If it is, then I would gladly spent the extra cash. I just want to know in the long run which would be better to own? I guess in terms of rebuild, etc.

if your going to rebuild the motor it doesnt matter. honda engines will all last if build them right so if your gonna rebuild it then spend a little extra cash and get the dohc zc.

I dont have the money for a rebuild right now. Im just looking for something that has decent power, and isn't that hard to drop in. My current engine has been burning oil since i got it 2 years ago and it's at 235,385 miles as of today. Not sure how much longer she'll hold up.

You wont here me say this often Im more of a Single Cam guy but, IMO the DOHC ZC is much better than the SOHC ZC. It puts down more torque and Hp and Really the SOHC ZC is a Golrified D16a6 I think its cam is more aggressive and thats about it. When i was shopping for a new motor i Was Looking at the ZC motors it was never a contest between them tho. I found myself stuck on whether to get the DOHC ZC or the D15B Vtec motor both put down the same HP and one is a 1.5 litter. Reason one why i went the way i did. In the long run i looked at parts the DOHC ZC has different bolt patterns for it intake manifold and the Exaust manifold. This is the main reason I went with the D15b and am very happy with it. I Say go with the DOHC or find another motor Besides a ZC.

i went from a 200k mile si motor to a dohc zc and i def felt a difference. but i liek that fact that u can find so much parts for single cams. im doin a compression test on my zc soon, if its bad im takin it out, selling it and goin with a sohc zc. either way d series are dime and dozen motors so dont worry about it. if i was u id get the sohc zc and in the future slap on a y8 head, thats what im doin.

you tell me how the ZC has "more torque" than a normal d16. they have the same bore and stroke. displacement is torque, and rod length and stroke have something to add to the mix also.

its the same damn bottom end (pretty much).

SOHC ZC... i dont see how it has 120hp, the internals are 100% identical to d16a6, the only difference is the cam. +12hp with a cam alone would give it a lope at idle, it would seem to me. i know stock SOHC VTEC's will lope if you engage VTEC at idle.

SOHC ZC non VTEC -It's rated an HONEST 120 ps
why the 10 extra HP?
because US Honda had to lower the HP ratings slightly to keep Acura happy

If you do some research you'll see over and over again the D16A6 with IHE will net around 110 to the wheels

YES the DOHC ZC makes more power out the box, but for the $$$ SOHC ZC ownz

I still Cant See spending the money on a motor thats almost the same as the one that came in the car stock. Spend the Extra money and get some more power. My friend has one and it pulls very good, much better than the d16a6 that was in it befor.
