no, u can do it with the motor still in the car, just pull the oil pan off and take the head off.

thats not why he asked that...he asked it for time reference...and id rather pull the motor than take off the head and pan in a car...

Same here, especially since you need to give the cylinders a fresh hone. I'd rather yank it out than try to keep all the little powdery shavings from the cylinder getting on the crank, etc.
MUCH easier to do with the motor out. Even someone who hasnt pulled the motor before can yank it in a couple hours.
And yeah, do all 4 at the same time, so you dont have to pull it out to do cylinders 2, 3, or 4 all individually when they go bad too.

I think it would be cheaper to change the rings out then to replace the whole engine. Even with machining costs and parts.
do u think mechanics pull the motor just to swap some rings and pistons? pulling the motor would be a lot more time consuming. u can clean off the crank just as good with it still on the car
