Best Street class Tire and Tire size on a 15x6.5" rim - Auto-x use ONLY
As the topic says, I am looking for a Street class Auto-x Tire ( no R compound ones) and Tire size on a 15x 6.5" rim for Auto-x purpose ONLY. Falken Azenis 205 50 15 seems to be the best one around.
I see that there is another topic going on about Street + Auto-x tire, since I am looking for a DEDICATED Auto-x tire, tread life, wet weather traction etc should not be considered. From the information I have, it looks like Azenis tends to loose traction once the tires are hot. Any other suggestions?
Its for a Novice driver (around 8 auto-x's so far) with a 99 Integra GSR

Oh jeez not that again. lol
Azenis, best bang for the buck and can double as daily summer (depending on climate maybe even 3 season) and even track tires.
fyi, poseur

He probably only has one set of wheels, and doesn't want to daily drive w/ the gear reduction and all. I answer only because I was in the same situation with my old car.

azenis, by a mile.
they do get greasy, but a garden sprayer in grid will take care of that. also, b/c most a/x courses are short (90 secs or less) azenis will hold up just fine.
20 min open lapping may be a little too much for the azenis to handle at one time, but it still performs admirably for the first 15 mins or so.
the only other option to really consider is the Kumho MX.

I'll be auto-xing on MX's for the first time tomorrow not on my PigLude but an integra. I'm looking forward to see how they perform. Honestly my recent experience with the azenis is that they're great for the first half of the auto-x course then they give up for the rest of the course. When I say give up they feel greasy and just don't grip as well as they did during the first half of the course. Furthermore, my tire pressures remain relitively the same before and after the run (33-34 psi) so I'm think the heat just makes them greasy.
Your pressures remain the same on your Azenis?
I found that mine would blow up like 8 lbs per fun at auto-x's. On the other side, they didn't blow up like at all for track days, which I thought was strange.

Yes, very little pressure varibility. I've check it time and time again, with repeatable results.

Mine too. I start out with 40psi front and 35 rear and I'm bleeding out 1-2psi on the fronts after every run (and we get 4-5 runs).

if anyone is interested here's my impression of the MX coming from an azenis user.
-I could definately feel the softer side wall but I don't believe it had adverse affect on the tire's performance. We started at 40 psi in the front and ran that for 3 runs (did a BMW auto-x). At 40 psi the tire wasn't rolling on to the side wall, we had polish. For the 3 runs in the afternoon we dropped the front pressures down to 38 psi. The tire rolled over a slight bit more but it felt so much better. I actual think having the tire roll over a slight bit is good. With that front pressure the front was not understeering it was connecting really well. I find it point less to talk about the rears cus obviously in our car the front tires matter more.
-As for grip. I don't believe I can provide and accurate account as to which tire grips better. I would have to do one run with the MX and another run with the azenis to possibly determine the grippier tire. That said, I feel the MX grips just fine, when you push it to its adhesion limits it seems not to screech that loud, and actual seems to grip better at its adhesion limit than the azenis. Overall I'd say grip is not a concern with the tire.
-And finally, the tire handles heat so much better than the azenis. I was so happy that near the end of my runs the tire was still gripping, where the azenis would fail. This has got to be the many advantage in the tire.
-One last thought. As you've probably heard the MX seems to do better with the tread wore in a bit. I can testify to that, the MXs I ran on today had been wore in quite a bit but not too much I'd say 65% tread left.

good review, I have been saying that the MXs are a pretty damm good tire for a year now.
I'm glad someone said that too.
As for them wearing badly, what type of surface was the autoX on?
