Default what causes clutch chatter?

i had an experience with my clutch when my mechanic installed it. i was installing a CM stage 3 clutch on to my CM flywheel that i already had in there. when i got it out of the shop i notice there was severe chatter . this happened for a while until i got sick of it. it made me go back to stock flywheel and and clutch. my mechanic noticed grooves or hotspots on the CM flywheel so could that be a reason for the chatter. do u think the disk and pressure plate is fine. my stock clutch now is losing its grabing power and i wanted to try out my CM clutch again. i will be using the stock flywheel with the CM clutch. this clutch only has 500 miles on it. do u think i should just buy a new clutch even though this clutch is still pretty much new. my funds arent that good but i need some advice

just use your stock clutch the way it is. But i'm thinking your chatter is coming from either the pilot or throw out bearing. Did you change both of these when putting in your CM clutch and pressure plate?

I thought that clutch chatter was caused by a mis-aligned pressure plate. You can mis-align a pressure plate if you don't properly tighten the pressure plate to the flywheel.

I had clutch chatter on a stock friction plate once but it eventually went away.

yeah it came with a new throw out bearing. its weird that alot of u guys are experiencing this too. its a sprung disc and should not chatter so i just hate it when it does. the pressure plate was aligned properly cause my mechanic does great work. just trying to figure out if it was the CM flywheel caussing this?

Did you have the flywheel re-surfaced when you did the clutch?

It's not necessary to re-surface, but it is a good idea.

Clutch chatter is usually caused by a bent disc. If you are not careful when sliding the transmission back in, it is very easy to bend the disc. The input shaft needs to go in straight, and the transmissionneeds to be well supported. If is not, the disc will be bent and cause chatter.

I don't know about chatter in light organic clutches like stock or stages 1 & 2 CM/ACT. But I had a bronze ceramic 4 puck stage 4 in my R, with a resurfaced ITR flywheel and that puppy chattered badly at first and eventually went away 75% Just light chatter at engagement from there on, but boy did it grip. Slippage wasn't even in it's vocabulary.

Just for the record, chatter in a heavy race style clutch is not an indcation of improperly installed parts, it's totally natural.

Good info guys. I was thinking too, that it was bad installation, but the mechanic who did mines is really good, so I was a bit confused. But if its natural then im not worrying, my chattering isnt that loud either.
