Im looking for a pre-fabbed sub box for my 2-10's. I have looked at such brands as Q logic and OBCON. and they seem nice and strong. But they are on the net. So im going to go around to local shops and look for a box.
How do i tell if the box is made out of MDF and what thicnkess??
What do i look for??
Can i knock on it and tell by the sound??
Can i tell by how heavy it is??
I need some tips. To be a smart consumer

Honestly, just about all pre-fab boxes are junk. You can tell if it is MDF just by looking inside it, if it looks like wood chips glued together then it isn't MDF. If it looks like sawdust glued together then it is MDF.

Of the pre-fabbed boxs I have used the Q logic is by far the best, I haven't seen the OBCON so I can't say if its better or worse.
How heavy the box is, will tell you how good the MDF is, most use 3/4" MDF.
But evan the best box can be made to sound better.
1- seal inside of box , just painting will help, a spray "dynamat" is better, and the best is to use fiberglass resin, then a spray "dynnamat".
2- bracing [if your doing this, do it before sealing] glue in 1"x1"x1.5" MDF or hardwood braces along all the inside edges every 3 or 4 inchs.
If its a large box it also helps to brace front to back and top to bottem useing
1"x2"x ? MDF.
3- cut carpet out from under sub mounting lip, makes a crappy gasget.
Most pre-fabbed boxs will be to big for your subs [air space] so with bracing you can use up air space to match what your subs need.
hope this helps.

Thanks, maybe i will look for a good quality pre fabbed box. and beef it up a little bit. The reason im not getting a box made, is that my Xtant subs cost me 80 bucks for the pair(10 inch). I want to see how they sound, before i invest the money in having a box built. The largest size recommended is 1 cubic foot per sub. And thats the space i want them to have, so i can get them to play as deep as possible. The Q logics, medium sealed box for 10's states 1 cubic foot per sub. So i might just play it safe and go with the Q
