I've steamed cleaned my engine a few times, take a plastic bag and cover up your distributor good, try and stay away from your fuse box too. And If you have an intake with an uncovered filter, keep that covered too...

what he said. Just be careful and try not to get electronics wet. also might wanna invest in some Blue Away or other steel polish to clean up the header if its discolored or stained

Yea I was more worried about the header. Engine and compartment itself is still pretty clean. Header is just a little discolored and I was gonna see if steam cleaning would help that out a bit. But i will look for that cleaner as well. Thanks.

Steam wont clean a tarnished header. You have to whip out the metal polish and shine that bish up

A standard garden hose and a spray bottle of Simple green with a small brush will clean any dirty engine bay

as for you dingy header, do what everyone else says.

Hose, Simpy Green, Tooth Brush, Towel and a air compressor to get all the water out of those tight area's. Then some CarBrite engine dressing.... ooooo sooooo much shine.

Where can I get my engine steam cleaned in Orange/LA County, CA? I've called all of the local car washes and none of them do steam cleaning, nor know where I can get it done.

Just buy your own steamer. Then you can charge your friends to come over and use it

I have not seen an engine bay that Simple green can't clean.

Buy the gallon of Simple Green and a brush that reaches in the tuff areas (toilet brush ) and go to town with a garden hose. I'm sure you will be happy saving money and very happy with the results.

I think hose and SG is best. Dont use the car wash high pressure or soap, and I'd personally stay away from steam cleaning if someone else does it. Use low pressure water if you do.

I had a bad experience on my Toyota truck. Stupid dealer used some kind of harsh chemical in the steamer, and it ate my plastics and hardened the rubber parts. Took about 6 months to a year to show up, but it was fuxored. It still worked fine, but you don't want to mess up the R.

The high pressure wash of most car washes will do the same thing. Get's water into all the shiznit, even if you bag the electrics, and it WILL cause problems down the road. I have pulled apart a few friend's cars washed this way, and it gets into everything. Corrodes the bolts (bad on alum engines fo sho - pulled threads in the alu block, etc. = no good). Can force water past the seals, etc. Plus, the high pressure spray can even rough up or take off the paint, even at the micro level, later leaving ***** looking kinda dull and cr@ppy.

I've actually tried to clean the engine myself, using P21S Total Auto Wash (citrus degreaser for engine cleaning) and a brush. I followed these instructions step by step:

http://www.autopia-carcare.com/inf-engine.html

Though it cleaned the surface, it didn't clean deep in the engine bay, so the engine isn't perfectly clean. Maybe it's because I've never cleaned my engine for 7.5 years. I'm hoping that professional steam cleaning can make my engine spotless.

I called 5 car washes in my area and none of them do steam cleaning. Does anybody in So Cal know where I can get professional steam cleaning and how much does it cost? If you're not in So Cal and have had your engine steam cleaned, where did you get it done?

I would retry with the simple green before you comit yourself to the pressure washer. for under $10.oo it can't hurt, besides its a good thing to have extra simple green hangin around.
