IDLE DROPS DRAMATICALLY WHEN A/C IS TURNED ON.
1996 HONDA ACCORD EX-4 CYLINDER V-TEC. WHENEVER I TURN MY A/C ON, THE IDLE DROPS SO MUCH THE CAR ALMOST DIES AT STOPS AND THE AIR IS NOT VERY COLD. IF I TURN IT OFF THE IDLE RETURNS TO NORMAL.
Idle drop from the AC is normal for our cars... It just sucks more electricity from the battery and alternator andm makes the car weak and sluggish. If you are very worried adjust your idle. But i can assure you that it happens to all accords.
I had this happen to my civic. When i would turn on the air, the idle would drop so low that the ac condenser would click on and off. What worked for me is i reset my base idle, so give it a try.

well your right, but for wrong reasons
! See, the reason the idles drops is because of the extra load on the engine from the A/C compressor - it really has nothing to do with electical pull. But you are right, it is normal. For some reason, on my moms 99 accord ex 4cyl it doesn't drop...it dips for half a second and comes back up to around 750-800 (its an automatic).

my old accord did that, does your AC start blowing hot air for a little bit then blows cold air, then back and forth. can you feel a more noticeable drop than normal when your AC comes on while you are driving? does the AC make a clicking/popping noise on the hood when the compressor comes on?

have you recharged the A/C recently? I recharged mine and the compressor dropped the idle until almost dead then the compressor would kick off. I found out that I overcharged the system. It might be overcharged/undercharged.
just re-charged mine and im having the same thing happen... drops so low it feels like its about to stall out... i think mine is undercharged tho. ill check my guage tomorrow and see what its at... BTW... anyone have a condensor fan for sale?
off the subject was wondering if yoou knew any sites that i can get a air compressor and escavator for cooling system on a 93 accord..... just wondering thanks....
I just had this problem with my 01 Yukon. Your car should notice a bit of an engine hit, but as everyone has said, it should not push it it to almost stalling. The shop said the fuel lines were clogged and the extra hit from the AC was over taxing an already anemic engine flow. A fuel line flush out cleared it up and it runs perfectly now.
If the system is overcharged, the clutch slips because the pressure builds up too high. It costs around $90 to have a shop vacuum out the A/C and add r-134a to the correct pressure. On my car, the high side was overcharged.
This just started happening after I added Refrigerant. It does sound like the compressor keeps turning on and off. Could anyone give me do it yourself instructions on vacuuming out the A/C compressor?
I overcharged mine about 2 weeks ago and I know I shouldn't have done this but I'm poor so I used a nail and relieved a lot of the pressure from the high side by pushing the little pin in (just like how you would let the air out of a tire). After I let out a fair amount of pressure, the compressor would run fine for about 5-10 minutes then it would start kicking on and off. So I let out even more pressure and now it works fine, although the air isn't too cool. It works well enough for me and I saved $90 so I'm happy with it.

the electricity can play a part in it, ive got an autozone battery and since i got that one, if i roll up/down more than one window at a time the idle will drop and all lights dim...

Yea the A/C definitely pulls from your battery. I have a volt gauge in my car and it drops from 14 volts to 12 volts when I turn on the A/C. I don't think the fans alone would draw that much power but I could be wrong. Either way, when you turn on your A/C, your volts drop.

for my 97 accord, i had the same thing happen and it wound up to be my motor mounts for sum reason.. i went to the dealership and they told me that thats what it was... its liek 1500 to fix..
WHAT? How could motor mounts have anything to do with the A/C? That's weird. I'd get that double checked. I also wouldn't pay $1500 for A/C but that's me.
sounds like you got ripped off with the whole motor mount issue their buddy...
yah, my 95 'cord f22b1 use to have the same prob, and i thought it was just broken. but i didnt care and just ignored it because i live in NY so its cold here anyways. but then got new subs and amp so purchased a DieHard Gold battery, then a/c was working beautiful, magical how that works. my car still drops idle though at stops and whatnot but ive ridden in brand new fricken navigators and that happens too, so i assume its normal.

My 92 LX 5 speed, idle drops when I turn the AC on but when I come to a stop it starts to rev by itself. It goes between 800 and 2K RPM. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?
Thanks
Thanks
back from the dead.....
anyways, i'm still having this issue. its to the point that when the ac is on and i come to a stop or put the car in netural it fukin stalls. this is pissing me off alot.
any help.... and no this is not normal, maybe the idle drops when you first turn on the system but not to the point that the car turns off.
thanks in advance.
Mine is having the same problem too. I just had the compressor replaced. Its a 97 LX (f22b2). I am thinking about adjusting the idle screw on the t/b to see if that makes any difference.
