Default Difference between obd0-obd1-obd2 distributor.

Is there a visual difference between the obd0-obd1-obd2 distributors?

A friend of mine has a couple extras lying around but im not sure what they are, nor is he.

What do I need to look for to tell them apart from one-another?

Also, putting a z6 or y8 into the rex, can you use the obd1 dist. and still run an obd0 ecu? The car getting the swap will not be running vtec until some more parts are tracked down, so in the meantime its gonna have a vtecless y8 in there.

So I guess the question is, can I use the dist. that comes w/ the y8 and still run it through the existing SI harness/ecu?

Also, when it the car gets converted to obd1, can I use the y8 dist, or do I need a z6 dist?

Im sorry if this is confusing. Im kind of confused reading the post myself. lol

That was no help.

Say you have 3 dizzy's sitting on a table. How do you tell them apart?

BTW, when its converted to obd1, can I use an obd2 dizzy? Are they compatible?

The plugs are different. Look at some pics in the classifieds. You'll see.

OBD0 has wires coming out of the top beside the top of the dizzy cap, OBD1 has all the wires out of the bottom

Depends on which motor you go with. The D16Z6 can only use the D16Z6 distributor without hacking up the mounting ears. The D16Y8 distributor will bolt up to all D series SOHC motors except the D16Z6. The plugs for the D16Z6 are grey, and there are 2 plugs. One with 2 large gauge wires, and another with 7 small gauge wires. The OBD2 distributor will have 1 grey plug with all 9 wires in it. The OBD0 distributor will have 2 white (yellowed with age) plugs. The OBD1 and OBD2 distributors will work with OBD1 or OBD2 setups (OBD1 and OBD2 are fully compatible electronics wise). The OBD0 ECU needs an OBD0 distributor.

Are all 3 bolts screwed into the head, or are you working with 1 bolt only?

each spot has a bolt in it, but i made some custom stainless steel brackets . I am willing to sell some of these brackets to others if they need them.

Brackets? where did you bolt them to?

You can't put a relocation bracket using the Z6 distributor screw holes because it will shim the distributor outwards from the cam. This creates less engagement between the cam groove and the distributor.

There is really no other place to mount a bracket that I'm aware of.

I want to see pics!

i put the holes in the brackets in place of my timing. The last thing i did was drill the wholes. I started my car with the dizzy not bolted in (my friend holding it in place), and we rotated the dizzy until timing was okay, then marked the wholes on the brackets. Bling Blauw, OBD0 dizzy on a D16Z6

You can use either an OBD1 or an OBD2 distributor on an OBD1 car. You have to add a wire to the OBD2 distributor for the RPM signal I believe it's the blue wire.

I would say convert the car to OBD1 and run a newer distributor, it would run the timing alot better. The brackets that iastreetracing.com are very cool but still, I'd say run the OBD1.

Ahhhh - I see.
So do you have only one bracket or 2? Isn't it the top-most ear on the distributor that normally gets a hack job with a bolt and big washer?
From what I've seen from the hack and big washer, the mounting hole on the head is hidden by the ear on the dizzy. Is that right?

all three ears are bolted in, i just used the washer to pull the dizzy close to the head. This method works really well. 89 hatch, d16z6, obd0 dizzy, obd0 ecu.
