This thread doesn't really belong here, but I see no harm in leaving it I guess.

With the amount of radars out there, I would see how it would be difficult to choose from. I remember a while back where a company promised to pay for your ticket should you recieve one while you had their radar in use.. But I have not seen that add in a very loooong time. So I take it they didnt do to well.

i've read more than my fair share of reviews and test data, and the 3 "normal" radar detectors that own everybody else are the valentine 1, the escort 8500, and whatever the top of the line BEL is, i forget. in a different league, there's the K40 undetectable system. K40 is the brand that will pay for your tickets for a full year, and the deal still stands. they have a "normal" radar detector that still has the 1 year warranty, but it's not as good as the other 3 i mentioned. however, their undetectable system is rated even better than those 3 (as it should considering it retails for $1200), and they also have a perfectly legal laser diffuser system (retail $300), both of which come with that same 1 year warranty.

even if you don't want one, check out their website sometime, http://www.k40.com

and now a shameless plug , i have the k40 2000P undetectable system (front and rear) as well as the laser diffuser plus system for sale, and it'll be in the classifieds section like 5 minutes from now for $600

When it comes to radar detectors, basically, you get what you pay for. You buy some cheap cobra **** at best buy, don't expect it to work too well. For real reliability, I'd only buy a V1 or passport 8500.

ive got the passport escort 8500 and i love it. paid itself off quick. yea the tickets cost alot to pay but tis the insurance that is the real pain in the *** when it goes up. plus ive got mine hardwired into my vechile so there is minimal wire hanging out. take a look at my pic. its located on the sun visor. u cant notice it from the outside of the vehicle unless you bend down and know its there (very good if you go onto a military base where radar detectors are not allowed).

The Valentine 1 (edit: usually) wins in magazine comparisons. It might have tied or lost by one point once, but it's usually far ahead. Like someone pointed out, the upgrages are great. New software upgrades are relatively cheap, and they don't upgrade yours, they just send you a whole new detector. It's pricey, but tickets and the resulting insurance rates are usually higher.

the valentine doesn't always win, it's just always right at the top. i've seen the BEL beat it by a little, and the escort is usually just barely behind (but it's cheaper). as far as upgradeability, i know for sure that the new 8500 x50 has that, but i don't think the old 8500 does. and i haven't looked at BEL.

and remember a radar detector is just that, a detector. just because you have one doesnt mean you are not going to get a speeding ticket. also dont expect everytime your detector to go off that it is a cop. just gotta be smart with it.

Is it really worth getting a radar detector?? How well do they work at preventing tickets?

i don't think there worth it when they cost $800 or more. their are alot of decent ones for under 300. but i don't care how much you spent on a radar detector, it still won't do you much good if your in the triple digits

Totally agree dont spend more than 400. I think the Escort 8500 is the best for the dollar

lol. very true. as long as it reads radar... and laser, it's decent. i don't go for overpriced. that's just what it is, detects so you can react quicker.
