possible to weld un-like metals?

Default possible to weld un-like metals?

can stainless be welded to steel?
a welder is telling me the metals have to be the same. is that true?

There's hundreds of flavors of stainless, & hundreds of flavors of plain carbon steel. If you've got lots of money to spend (& lots of parts to waste) figuring it out, you can probably weld anything. You probably end up using a series of several fill-metals of intermediate composition.

he is probably asking can he weld typical 304 stainless which is used in exhaust tubeing to his standard honda mild steel exhuast pipe. The answer is yes!!!! is it optimal? no but it will work and the wled will not break off or damage anythnig. It is kinda hard to weld them together. the stainless wants to flow more than the mikd steel but its not rocket science.

well im not sure of the exact metals.
i had another guy arc weld it without a problem

do you guys know if this will work? to be used as a crank pulley holder
