Default rattling noise??

There is a shaky, rattling noise near the engine when I get moving in first, especially when I give it a bit too much gas and not enough clutch. This is the same noise that I have with a old accord, and I figured it to be the dust shield. Assuming this is what it is, how would I go about removing it?

Also the shifter area makes noise when I downshift and press on the gear I plan to go in before I push in the clutch, I assume this is from the syncros?

I don't think it has to do with the motor itself, somthing around it.

I assume I would use the 70$ manual to find out how to fix such a thing. It sounds like thin metal vibrating (beacuse of engine speed) So eather dust shield or heat shield.

I have the exact same problem. It's the exhaust manifold heat shield. Just haven't had the time to fix it.

I have had the same problem and it start out as the shield above the cat. converter. Then the rattle continued and it turned out to be a paice of sheet metal on the side of the transmission housing.

is this a safe thing to do? There is a wire about 3in approx away from the exaust manifold, would removeing the heat shield affect anything? Should I give anything close to it more protection some how?

Get underneath your car and tap your car with a rubber mallet and see if you hear that sound and if so then your cats the culprit.

I reved the car up to about 4k, and someone standing in front of it said that you could hear it form the engine, unless there is a cat right after the manifold.

The noise I had would start whenever the car would idle and in first gear. I couldn't figure out what the noise was. Neither could the dealership. I ended up taking it to this mechanic w/ a small shop for something else. When he heard the noise he told me to pop the hood. As soon as he did, he knew what it was. He held the edge of the heat shield away from the manifold with his phone's antenna and reved it from the throttlebody. Reved it hard, reved it soft, and let it idle. No more noise. Everyone told me it was the cat and it wasn't. If you don't want to remove the heat shield take it to a muffler shop and get it welded.

Try the same test as the mechanic only don't use your phone's antenna.

The rattling turned out to be the exhaust manifold heat shield as well as the upper shield of the cat.
