rattling noise??
There is a shaky, rattling noise near the engine when I get moving in first, especially when I give it a bit too much gas and not enough clutch. This is the same noise that I have with a old accord, and I figured it to be the dust shield. Assuming this is what it is, how would I go about removing it?
Also the shifter area makes noise when I downshift and press on the gear I plan to go in before I push in the clutch, I assume this is from the syncros?

I have had the same problem and it start out as the shield above the cat. converter. Then the rattle continued and it turned out to be a paice of sheet metal on the side of the transmission housing.
is this a safe thing to do? There is a wire about 3in approx away from the exaust manifold, would removeing the heat shield affect anything? Should I give anything close to it more protection some how?
The noise I had would start whenever the car would idle and in first gear. I couldn't figure out what the noise was. Neither could the dealership. I ended up taking it to this mechanic w/ a small shop for something else. When he heard the noise he told me to pop the hood. As soon as he did, he knew what it was. He held the edge of the heat shield away from the manifold with his phone's antenna and reved it from the throttlebody. Reved it hard, reved it soft, and let it idle. No more noise. Everyone told me it was the cat and it wasn't. If you don't want to remove the heat shield take it to a muffler shop and get it welded.
Try the same test as the mechanic only don't use your phone's antenna.
