Default Raising suspension, more clearance, 1987 Civic wagon 4wd

I love my civic wagon 4wd but I could use another couple inches of clearance as I live on a rough, rutted mountain road. The 4wd is awesome but i need a bit more clearance. The vehicle is stock with 13" wheels and tires. Can I put larger wheel and tires on it witout doing damage to the tranny or gear ratio? Any suggestions? Thanks.... Jono

I would suggest moving up to 14" or 15" wheels because you already want the extra ground clearance and there are sooooo many more tires to choose from. You can find 85-87 Si "phone dial" wheels almost anywhere for cheap. Obviously larger diameter tires will increase your gearing by the percentage that they are bigger than your stock tires but it shouldn't hurt your tranny. Since your front springs are torsion bars instead of coil springs you can raise the front some by tightening the torsion bar adjusting nut. Be sure to tighten it the same amount on both sides. For the rear you can buy some air-adjustable shock absorbers. Just don't jack it up ALL the way and make sure you still have some rebound travel or it will handle poorly. You could also buy some aftermarket rear springs or use spacers to get some extra ride height. That's about all I can think of right now.
