Isnt vtec made to save gas?
By running 2 camshaft profiles on one cam, you can run below the change over with less lift making less horsepower and expending less fuel. Then, when you hit the correct RPM, it changes over to a higher lift thus providing more horsepower and expendng more fuel.
I wouldn't say that it is entirely a fuel savings device as it does so many other things by having two profiles. But it is a part of it. Driven appropriately, it can save fuel. But you can rag on it and not save fuel. I think of it more as a power adder than as a fuel saver.
