If you have done this test and remember the psi per cylinder, please post your results. Also, please specify if you did the test on a JDM or USDM R, miles, and year.

BTW, this a great test to get an idea of how your engine is doing. The gauge only costs about $25 at any auto parts store.

US motor, 12 thousandths milled off the head.. probably 35-38k miles.. not 100% sure because I have a different cluster..

245 in three cylinders, 235 in cylinder 4

for the record, we also did my friend's motor w/ 12.2:1 Endyn pistons and 15 thou off the head and it hit 300psi and broke the gauge!

WOW !!! 300 psi?

Do you think your compression is higher with that milled head?

Great info,

thx

I would like to add that different gauges could give you different results. Not because of error in the meter itself, but simply how the tap that screws into the spark plug is constructed.

The larger the volume of air in the meter tap the lower the readings will be. This extra volume of air actually lowers the CR of the engine while doing the test.

I have proven this by modifying my tester and watching the readings change. My meter initially had a large volume of air in its probe, my readings were in the 205psi range. When I filled this volume of air with un-compressible material (epoxy with a small hole drilled through it) my numbers jumped to 225psi.

For this reason I would not look to closely at the magnitude of the readings but in the consistency of the readings. Most engines that I have seen posted here produce anywhere from 200 to 230 psi. A strong healthy engine will have no more the 5psi variation between cylinders.

Hope that made sense!

Regards,
