Poor man's centerstand (SV650)
The SV doesnt come with a centerstand. there are some aftermarket ones but the fit and finish isnt all that great, and some cutting/bending is needed. thats all fine and good but i really just need a way to lube the chain etc.
I read about this on one of the many SV webpages. this thing really does have a rabid following. basically its a couple of 8mm bolts with some nuts that screw into the threaded holes in the swingarm so you can add paddock stand thingies (no idea what they are called).
while the bike is on the sidestand, just lean it over onto the right jackstand then slide the left one in place...
the rear tire is about an inch off the ground and could be raised a bit more if needed, but i dont need it...
now, this is NOT as stable as the real paddock stands, or a real centerstand, but it is fine for light wrenching and basic maintenance. i almost tipped the bike over while doing this, she was 1/3 the way over on the right side and i caught it. it was the closest call i've had since the 1st day i ever rode a bike 9 years ago. good thing this thing is so light.
I bought nice stainless steel hardware, so it cost me a whopping $5.43 for this. the guy who suggested this did not bolt them to his bike, but just spun them on for garage work. i dont see any harm in keeping them in place so i used a pair of nuts/washers to bolt them in permanently.

still have the FJR, but i got the ninja 250 fixed up and now its out being a new-rider mule for a friend of mine and i realized how cool it was to have a small bike so i got the SV. going to install frame sliders here in a few minutes.
Wow, very McGyver.
Love the matching jackstands.
Do the "bobbins" drag when you turn/lean?
You might want to find something to prevent you from accidentally kicking the "release" lever on the jackstand.

Handy Industries will sell ya a set of stands (front and rear) for $99.00.
Might also try Redlinestands (I think).
Kickstand/jack thing is OK for real limited use but it will loosen the stand bolts eventually and also can fatigue the stand itself.

Sounds kinda difficult to get it up. Did you get it on the first try? I work on my bikes and friends bikes a lot so I invested in some pit bulls. Worth the price of security and peace of mind.

not sure i fully understand... i am not leaning the bike on its kickstand at all, you push it off of the kickstand (as if you were going to get on it to ride) and onto the jackstand on the right side, then slide the left jackstand in place...so the kickstand never has any more than normal force applied to it.
the stock kickstand is a very cheap piece of stamped steel. this bike is 2500-4000 cheaper than other similar bikes cause they made so much of it as cheap as possible (i'd say the aluminum frame and motor/drivetrain is top notch, the rest is nothing to brag about.) . a handful of people have reported sidestands breaking over the 99-04 bikes, so i am treating mine nicely.

its pretty straightforward to use once you do it a few times. its definitely not the safest route but it should be OK as long as i am careful.

thats a pretty nice looking tail. I like the crafty stand. Last time i had to get my front tire off my bike, i didnt have a rear or front stand. I used jackstands on my swingarm and 2 stock jacks on the front of my bike. Definitely not the safest thing to do but i had no choice. Now my brother got a pitbull stand so i can use that.
uh, i instlaled frame sliders on the frame already, near the engine, there are swingarm sliders, i guess thats what you're talking about...?
