mounting a camera? what are the rules about it?
I wanted to mount a digital camcorder to the dash of my car, to film my runs. I don't want to drill any holes. What do you think i could use? How many other people are using cameras in their cars.
Are you talking autocross with the SCCA? If so, I believe you need the mount with a safety strap. I'd read the rule book for a more precise answer to your question.
The camera must have a tether strap. Besides that it must be safe of course. I made my headrest post camera mount and so far after 3 years no problems. Even allows passengers to ride along, which my last mount wouldn't allow.
for autocross runs....what if we ghetto rig a tripod where the rear seats go (rear seats have been removed)
the tripod is tied down in 3 places and the whole tripod is uhh...seat belted
surprisngly...the tripod does not move much at all
does the camera need to be strapped to the tripod? or does the tripod need the strapping to the car?
my tripod passes tech all the time coz we're new to this thing here on Guam
but for future references and the proper way to do it...id like to find out

11.4.17 Camera Mounts
Video camera mounts should be approved by tech before entering the course at every
event. Cameras should use at least one (1) bolt to attach the camera to the mount; and
at least one strap should be used to secure the camera.
RACER
15.10 Camera Mounts
Cameras must use at least one (1) bolt to attach to the mount and at least one (1)
additional strap or tether must be used to secure the camera. Drivers found to have
poorly, or improperly mounted cameras will be subject to harsh penalties and fines. A
tether must be made of high tensile Dacron or steel, and must be short enough to
prevent the camera from reaching any part of the driver.
NASA TECH GUIDE
29.9 Camera Mount
Although not specific design is not specified in the NASA Rules, the following are
good practices that should be encouraged:
The camera mount must be of a secure design. This is hard to tell,
sometimes, without the camera actually on the mount. Therefore, have
the drive mount the camera. It should be held securely with at least on ¼
inch bolt and a tie-down strap, or tether system.
If using a tether, check to make sure that a loose camera cannot strick a
driver while attached by just the tether.
