Default Proform Shift Light Install Help ( - coil wire?? ) detailed

Bought a Proform shift light form one of the sponsors and it looks pretty bomb and easy to use and change rpm and whatever, just need a little help

I did the 12V switched power wire and the ground but there is a green wire that says to tap it into the coil negative, Ive heard of a coil but never really known what it was other than is part of the ignition system, can anyone give me any insight on where it is? or a pic?

Thanks for any help

I never installed a shift light but I think you can tap the wire from behind the cluster, do a search though its been covered a million times and I'm sure you will find it like that.

Ive been searching in this forum for the coil. I dont want to tap it up in the cluster because I mounted the shift light on the left side of the center console and running and hiding up to the cluster would be a pain, firewall is easier.

Thanks

probably the easiest/cleanest install is to run it directly to the coil, which is located inside the distributor. route your wire through the firewall, and put it inside some of the factory wire loom, or get a small piece of universal black wire loom and use that. remove your distributor cap. there will be 2 seals on the cap, one has the factory wires running through it, the other should be solid. what i did was use an awl and poke a hole in the solid rubber one and poke the wire through there. that way you still have a water tight seal.

anyways, inside the distributor, you will see a black box type thing, which is the coil. there will be 2 screw on terminals, one is marked + and one is marked - . guess which one is the negative coil wire

connect it there and you're good to go.

I'm pretty sure you can tap in to one of the wires inside the cabin, maybe the rpm wire that runs to the ecu.

So theres a white/blue wire that comes out of the dist cap? Or do I have to take the cap off?

If it just sticks out then Ill just carefully take off the outer rubber and wrap it around a few times

Sure its the white/blue?

you have to take the cap off and yes its white/blue. when you take the cap off you'll see it going to the coil

i didn't take my cap off, the wires come out of the cap, i just cut the wire right outside the cap and wired the tach into it, works perfectly, then there isn't a wire running inside your distributor...
