Default vtec...what's all the hype?

I blew a head gasket not to long ago and had a Y8 head laying around so I decided to go ahead and put it on. Well I couldn't tell to much difference with the y8 head than the A6. Looked at the cam gear and it was at +2 degrees. Somone told me to retard it -4 degrees. It fixed the idle problem but it feels like it misses a little climbing through the RPM's and feels bogged down. (will advance it to -2 later) Anyways. I also wired the vtec up while I was at it.

I can't feel any difference when vtec is activated besides the fact that I can climb higher in the RPM's. Without it it would stop at 6k now it will go past that. I guess the SOHC vtec isn't to much of a power gain.....are they more for fuel eco.?

Also what is the proper advance/retard degrees I need to set my cam gear at.

Well I was also just informed I need to set my dizzy timing with the cam gear timing since I adjusted the cam gear timing. How would I do this?
