Default Race Fuel getting Stale?

Anyone have a clue how long you can store race fuel (100 octane unleaded) in a capped off plastic jug without it "going bad"? 6 months, a year, forever?

Thanks,

Hmmm, so at 365 days it's just fine and at 366 (or 367 if it was a leap year) it's bad?

My scientific mind doesn't seem to believe that. If I have any left after a track weekend I end up running it in the lawn mower.

In a plastic jug, I would pour it in the tow vehicle. All the good stuff is long gone.

I just use the leftover stuff in the street car. That way I can smell that loveley exhaust all week.

Is it completely wrong that I LOVE the smell of exhaust from a car running race gas????

Depending on the kind of gas and the conditions under which it's stored, it's true that gas can have a shelf life of 30-60 days. This doesn't mean the car won't still run after 8 months sitting with old, untreated gas--it means that compounds from the gas will oxidize into gum, varnish and resin in the fuel system. This is something that motorcyclists and boaters are maybe more familiar with. I wouldn't be concerned leaving a car with half a tank of untreated gas for a month, although a full tank would have been better. For longer periods of storage, however, a bottle of fuel stabilizer only costs a couple of bucks.

Interesting topic ... in that I just topped off the tank in my CRX (and added some injector cleaner) for the first time since last June.

Not to say it may not have gone a bit stale, but the car started up and ran as well as usual. Also I've heard the additives in street gas tend to go bad, as opposed to race fuel (or AV fuel/gas).

my brother once had a few gallons of 115 octane gas in one of those clear/whiteish plastic 5-gal jugs. After sitting in the 100+ degree sun at the river for a weekend it gummed up his jet ski carb really badly. So keep it out of the sun in a dark container and it may last a bit longer. Ask yourself if it's really worth having your fuel system get all gummed up or if it's cheaper to just buy new gas.

Yeah, light definitely increases the speed at which gas goes bad...

I would not attempt to now use the 5 gal I bought in March. It has been going into the mower and trimmer ... formerly known as working trimmer If only I had a street car I coulda put it into LOL
